Atlanta Gladiators News Release
TRENTON, NJ - Despite surrendering three unanswered goals in the third, the Gladiators battled back for a 4-3 shootout win Saturday night at the Sun National Bank Center.
Gwinnett (24-25-7) moves into ninth in the East with the win, while Trenton (21-30-4) falls further back in the Eastern Conference cellar.
A John-Scott Dickson one-timer at 8:55 pushed the Glads lead to 3-0 in the third. It was Dickson's first goal since joining Gwinnett in a trade with Idaho. The Gladiators had a commanding lead, but it wouldn't last.
Trevor Kell made it 3-1 at 10:55 on the powerplay, Ryan Hayes brought the Devils within one less than a minute later at 11:48, and Tony Zancanero tied the game on the powerplay off a redirection in front with just 33 seconds left in regulation to tie the game.
After a scoreless overtime session where Gwinnet was outshot 8-1, both sides carried a 4-4 shootout into the eighth round. Eddy Pasquale was able to stop Zancanero, while defenseman Matt Duffy snuck a snap shot between the left arm and body of Trenton goalie Shane Connolly to seal a 4-3 shootout win for the Glads.
Pasquale stopped 47 of 50 shots to pick up his fifth win.
Pat Galivan scored the lone goal of the first period. The Gwinnett forward had a centering pass blocked from close in, but drove to the net and put the loose puck past goaltender Shane Connelly at 9:09 to give the Glads a 1-0 lead.
Kyle Kucharski followed up with the only goal of the second, as he beat Connolly on a rebound in front on the powerplay to push the Gwinnett edge to 2-0. Danick Paquette and Justin Milo assisted on the tally at 5:34.
It was Kucharski's first goal of the season, and came against his former team. The forward played parts of the past two seasons in Trenton, and had an assist in 14 games with the Devils earlier this year.
The Gladiators next head to Reading for a 4:05 p.m. Sunday tilt with the top team in the East, the Reading Royals.
