Aces Beat Wranglers In Overtime 4-3
February 26, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
Chris Langkow notched his first professional hat trick, and Garry Nunn finished off a three-point night with a goal 20 seconds into overtime to give the Alaska Aces a 4-3 overtime win over the Las Vegas Wranglers in front of a sellout crowd of 6,426 at Sullivan Arena on Friday night. The Aces win moved them into a share of first place in the Western Conference, and extended their league-best winning streak to six games. Alaska improved to 33-19-3 on the year. The Aces and Wranglers return on Sunday night to conclude their three-game series. Tickets are on sale now. The clubs shot out to a furious pace, and played the opening 9:54 of the game without a whistle. The fast-pace set the tone for the night, and the teams traded chances to no avail for most of the frame. The Wranglers finally broke the scoreless tie in the final minute of the period, when Greg Paukovich tallied from just outside the crease at 19:35. The Wranglers outshot the Aces 11-10 in the period.
The second period was more of the same, but the Aces notched the only goal of the frame. After a giveaway by Las Vegas in their own end, Nunn found Langkow in the low slot, and he delayed around netminder Billy Sauer before lifting the puck into the top shelf of the net at 7:28. The 1-1 tie remained through the period, and into the third. The Aces outshot the Wranglers 12-10 in the middle stanza.
The Aces took their first lead 17 seconds into the third period when Langkow scored his second of the night on a nice setup from Nunn to make it 2-1 Alaska. The Wranglers pulled back even when Blair Riley scored on a power play rebound at 11:12 to make it 2-2. Alaska wasted no time responding, and Langkow redirected a Brandon Gentile shot from the left post that trickled in under Sauer 80 seconds later to reclaim Alaska's lead. The Wranglers pulled Sauer late in the game for an extra attacker, and with time winding down, and just seconds left on the clock, the puck hopped off the left-side boards at neutral territory, Riley picked it up, stepped over the blue line and ripped a slapshot that found a hole through the stick side of Adam Courchaine at 19:58 to force overtime.
On the first shift of the extra session, Nunn walked into the Vegas zone and beat Sauer glove side with a wrist shot, 20 seconds into overtime to give Alaska the 4-3 win and a share of first place in the Western Conference.
Adam Courchaine (12-6-1) made 25 saves on 28 shots, earning the win. Billy Sauer (6-8-3) suffered the overtime loss, making 28 saves on 32 shots. The Aces power play went 0-1, while the Wranglers went 1-1. The Aces outshot the Wranglers 32-28 in the game.
The Aces and Wranglers are back at the Sully on Sunday at 5:00pm as they continue the matchup of the Western Conference Division leaders. Tickets are on sale now.
