Blades Assistant Coach Engele Recognized with WHL Distinguished Service Award

Published on March 31, 2026 under Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release

Saskatoon, Sask. - Western Hockey League Commissioner Dan Near announced today, on behalf of the WHL Board of Governors, that Jerome 'Beuf' Engele - Assistant Coach for the Saskatoon Blades - has been named the latest recipient of the WHL Distinguished Service Award for the 2025-26 WHL season.

The WHL Distinguished Service Award, which was introduced by the WHL in 2004, is presented annually to the individuals who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes on behalf of WHL franchises and in doing so have made an extraordinary contribution at the Club and League levels over an extended period. The WHL will present Distinguished Service Awards annually to an individual from both the WHL Western and Eastern Conferences.

Engele was honoured by Commissioner Near in Saskatoon during a special ceremony prior to Tuesday's WHL Playoff game between the Blades and Edmonton Oil Kings.

"For more than 60 years, Jerome has been involved with the Saskatoon Blades," commented WHL Commissioner Dan Near. "From representing the Club as a player to helping support and mentor young players as a coach, providing security detail and even driving the bus, Jerome is one of those rare people who contributes in such a special and meaningful way - not just to the Blades, but to the WHL."

Engele, who hails from Carmel, Sask., donned a Blades jersey from 1966-67 through 1970-71. Over five seasons as a Blades defenceman, he appeared in 263 games, collecting 60 points (3G-57A) and 815 minutes in penalties.

Following a professional playing career that included stops with the Minnesota North Stars over parts of three seasons (1975-76 to 1977-78), Engele served as Head Coach of the Blades for one season before deciding to join the Saskatoon Police Service. In 1983, Engele returned to the Blades as an assistant coach - a role that he has filled for nearly every season since.

Engele is the longest-serving member of the Blades staff. Over his time with the Club, he has served in many different capacities that reach far beyond the standard responsibilities of an assistant coach.

"Not many people in the history of the Saskatoon Blades have had the impact Jerome has had," said Colin Priestner, President and General Manager of the Blades. "He represents nearly every decade in different roles and has remained one of the most important people in the Club for over 50 years, and the Blades would not be what they are without him."

With a Class 2 driver's license, Engele often assists with bus driving efforts during long road trips, providing relief for the Blades' primary driver when they reach their limits. Given his experience as a police investigator, Engele is also well equipped to provide security detail for the Club when they are away from Saskatoon.

As a coach, Engele has done video coding and served behind the bench. Now, he coaches from up high, watching the game from above and delivering his assessment to the team during intermissions. Known for his meticulous detail, Engele is aware of everyone's place on the ice and what they were doing at any given moment in the game. When he isn't in the dressing room providing notes for the team, he spends time on the Blades desk at intermission, breaking down the game for fans on Saskatoon's Victory+ livestream production.

Engele is beloved and respected by his colleagues and the players he works with in Saskatoon.
