Buffalo Bisons News Release

The last time the Bisons faced Stephen Strasburg, he pitched his final game as a highly touted prospect. Living up to the hype, he hurled five shutout innings en route to a 7-1 Syracuse victory back in 2010.

On Wednesday night, over five years later, Strasburg and the Bisons met again. And this time, the Herd had MVP candidate Matt Hague on its side.

Buffalo defeated the Chiefs, 8-5, behind yet another impressive offensive display on Wednesday night for its second consecutive victory. The Herd has now won 19 of its last 25 games.

Buffalo offensive display was led by this season's most consistent Bison: Hague. The MVP candidate went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, while increasing his IL-leading average to .353. Hague drove in his two runs in the fifth inning for his third hit of the day.

Hague's two other hits came off of Strasburg, who pitched four innings and gave up three earned runs in a rehab start. Jonathan Diaz and Melky Mesa were the other Bisons to get a hit off of Strasburg. Diaz finished with two hits, one of which was a two-RBI single in the second inning to take an early 3-0 lead.

Dalton Pompey also contributed a multi-hit performance and tacked on a run in the seventh inning on an RBI double. It is the fifth consecutive game the Herd has scored over six runs after failing to reach that mark for four games prior to the streak. But as consistent as the offense has been, the pitching deserves its credit as well.

Scott Copeland earned a quality start, going six innings and gave up three runs (one earned) with three strikeouts in his eighth victory of the season. He has now won his last three starts in consecutive decisions. It was his sixth straight start of six innings or more.

Copeland did enough to preserve his win, but the bullpen almost negated his work. Phillippe Aumont gave up two runs in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to two runs, but Rob Rasmussen and Joba Chamberlain entered the game to pitch consecutive scoreless innings to end the game. Rasmussen has only given up one run this month.

The Bisons will finish off its series against Syracuse on Thursday before returning to Buffalo for a three-game series against Pawtucket. Thursday's game will begin at 7:05 p.m.

Bisons Notes: Joba Chamberlain gave up no hits and a walk en route to his first save with Buffalo ... The Herd has now won 10 of its last 12 games, dating back to July 18.
