Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
A three-run sixth cost the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (47-57) in a 5-3 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (57-48) on Tuesday night at PNC Field in Moosic.
The RailRiders plated three runs in the afore-mentioned sixth to take a 5-3 lead as Jose Pirela and Cole Figueroa each came through with RBI singles and Ben Gamel knocked home another with a sac fly.
All three runs were charged to LHP Cesar Jimenez (0.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB) who was tagged with the loss for the IronPigs and falls to 2-4 on the year.
RHP Wilking Rodriguez (2.0 IP, H, 5 K) tossed a pair of scoreless frames to earn the win for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and now sits at 2-0 this season. RHP Johnny Barbato (1.1 IP, H, K) got the final four outs to pick up his first save of the year for the RailRiders.
The Pigs took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first for the second straight night as a pair of two-out walks issued by RailRiders starter Joel De La Cruz put two men on for Cord Phelps who came through with an RBI single.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tied it at one with a run in the home half of the inning as Gamel drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on a two-base throwing error by Pigs starter Jesse Biddle and scored on Rob Refsnyder's RBI groundout.
In the home half of the fourth, a pair of two-out walks issued by Biddle led to an RBI single delivered by Austin Romine which gave the RailRiders a 2-1 lead.
Biddle (n/d) allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit while walking five and fanning four in 5.0 IP.
Lehigh Valley took the lead back with a pair of runs in the fifth to open a 3-2 advantage as Aaron Altherr (2-3, RBI, R) came through with an RBI single and Erik Kratz grounded into a 6-4-3 double play which allowed Brian Bogusevic (2-4, 2B, R) to score.
De La Cruz (n/d) gave up the three runs on eight hits to go along with two walks and two strikeouts over five innings of work.
Chris McGuiness (2-3) also had a multi-hit game for the Pigs.
RHP Nefi Ogando (2.1 IP, 2 H, BB, 2 K) had a scoreless outing in relief for manager Dave Brundage's squad.
The four-game home and home set continues with the first of two at Coca-Cola Park on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. as RHP Sean O'Sullivan (0-0, 3.46) will be on the bump for the IronPigs against RailRiders RHP Luis Severino (6-0, 2.11).
