Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (47-58) had their chances, but came up short in a 9-4 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (58-48) on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Park.
Lehigh Valley managed just three hits in the game.
Trailing 7-4, the Pigs brought the tying run to the plate in the home half of the eighth but Branden Pinder was able to get Aaron Altherr looking and Jose Ramirez fanned Erik Kratz to escape the jam.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Luis Severino (7-0) gave up two runs (none earned) on one hit while fanning ten over six plus innings of work. Ramirez (1.1 IP, K) got the final four outs to record his 10th save of the year.
Ben Gamel gave the RailRiders a 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run off of Pigs starter Sean O'Sullivan in the top of the first. The home run was Gamel's sixth of the season.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre extended the lead to 2-0 with a run in the second as Gary Sanchez reached via a leadoff single, moved to second on a walk, to third on a double play and scored on Austin Romine's RBI single with two outs in the frame.
Greg Bird's two-run shot in the top of the third opened up a 4-0 lead for the RailRiders. It was Bird's fourth home run of the season with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Gamel plated another run in the fourth with a two-out RBI single to give the visitors a 5-0 advantage.
The Pigs cut the lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning. With runners at the corners and one out, a wild pitch by Severino allowed Tyler Henson (2-4, R) to scamper home from third and Altherr to advance to second. Altherr moved to third on a fly out and scored on another wild pitch from Severino later in the frame.
Both runs were unearned courtesy of an error by 2B Rob Refsnyder in the inning.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre extended the lead to 7-2 with a pair of runs in the sixth as Romine came through with an RBI double that IronPigs RF Jordan Danks lost in the lights and Cole Figueroa drove home another run with a sac fly.
O'Sullivan (0-1) gave up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits while walking three and fanning one over five plus innings of work.
With runners at the corners and nobody out in the seventh, Cord Phelps grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, which allowed Altherr to score and bring Lehigh Valley within 7-3.
Sanchez's two-run double in the top of the ninth brought home a pair of insurance runs to give the RailRiders a 9-4 lead.
RHP Seth Rosin (3.0 IP, 2 H, 3 K) had a scoreless outing in relief for manager Dave Brundage's squad.
The series wraps up on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. as a starter yet to be determined for the Pigs will take on RailRiders RHP Bryan Mitchell (5-5, 3.12).
