Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs dropped a second game in a row to the Buffalo Bisons, 8-5, on Wednesday night at NBT Bank Stadium. Stephen Strasburg threw four innings and allowed three runs while striking out five in a rehab start for Syracuse. Matt Skole and Kevin Keyes each homered in the loss for the Chiefs.

Buffalo (55-50) struck first against Syracuse and Strasburg in the top of the second inning. Matt Hague and Melky Mesa each singled to start the second. Strasburg struck out the next two hitters, but then surrendered a walk to Munenori Kawasaki. With the bases loaded and Jonathan Diaz at the plate, Strasburg balked, forcing in Hague from third and advancing Mesa and Kawasaki. Then, Diaz singled to right field to plate two runs and give the Bisons a 3-0 lead.

Strasburg pitched four innings in his rehab start for Syracuse. The right-hander, who is rehabbing from an oblique injury, allowed four hits, three earned runs and one walk while striking out five.

Syracuse (41-65) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning against Buffalo starter Scott Copeland. With one out, Skole drove his first Triple-A home run deep over the right-field fence. The solo shot cut the Bisons lead to 3-1 after four.

The Bisons answered with two runs in the top of the fifth inning against A.J. Cole. Diaz walked to start the inning. Two batters later, Andy Burns drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one out. With Diaz on third and Burns on second, Hague lined a single to left to drive in two runs to give Buffalo a 5-1 advantage.

The Chiefs pulled within two with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against Copeland. With one out, Keyes reached base on a missed-catch error by the first baseman Burns. With Tony Gwynn, Jr. at the plate, Copeland threw a wild pitch, allowing Keyes to advance to second. Gwynn followed with a single to left to score Keyes. After a Ricky Hague walk, Ramsey drove in Gwynn with an RBI single to right field to pull the Chiefs to within two runs.

Buffalo extended the lead back to four with two runs in the top of the seventh against Cole. Diaz singled to right field to open up the inning. The next batter, Dalton Pompey, doubled to deep right-center to drive in Diaz for the sixth Bisons run. Burns followed Pompey with an RBI single to center to push the Buffalo lead back to four.

Syracuse answered in the bottom of the seventh against Phillippe Aumont. Darin Mastroianni rolled a ground-ball single to right field to lead off the inning. After Aumont retired the next two hitters, Keyes clobbered a two-run home run over the left-field fence to cut the deficit back to two.

The Bisons added an insurance run in the top of the ninth against Matt Grace. Pompey laid down a bunt single up the first-base line to lead off the frame. Burns followed with a sacrifice bunt, which advanced Pompey to second. With Pompey on third and two outs, Matt Hague drove in his third run of the game with a double to right field.

Syracuse and Buffalo play the final game of a four-game set Thursday night at NBT Bank Stadium. The Chiefs send Taylor Jordan to the mound against left-hander Matt Boyd for the Bisons. The game is set to start at 7:05 p.m.
