Rochester Red Wings News Release
TOLEDO, OH - Rochester finished 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and fell to the Toledo Mud Hens 9-3 Wednesday afternoon at Fifth Third Field.
The Red Wings (54-51) recorded eight hits and drew four walks in 5.2 innings against Mud Hens (45-60) starter Mike Belfiore (5-9) but scored just two runs.
Rochester left two on in the first, second and fifth innings against Belfiore and bounced into double plays in the third and fourth. The Wings were within two runs at 4-2 in the fifth and had runners on second and third with nobody out following a Reynaldo Rodriguez double but didn't score. Toledo scored twice in the bottom half to open a 6-2 advantage.
Argenis Diaz gave the Red Wings a first-inning lead with a two-out single. The Mud Hens answered with two runs in the bottom half against Michael Bowden (7-3) who was making his Rochester debut. He had not pitched since throwing one inning in the Triple-A All-Star Game on July 15. He would allow two more runs in the third on Mike Hessman's 432nd minor league home run, tying him for the all-time MiLB record, to give Toledo a 4-1 lead.
Bowden threw 76 pitches in 4.0 innings while surrendering six hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
Doug Bernier added an RBI single in the fourth to pull the Wings within 4-2. Logan Darnell, who took over for Bowden to begin the fifth, issued two walks to begin the inning that both came around to score as Rochester trailed 6-2.
Danny Ortiz hit his team-leading 12th home run in the seventh but the Mud Hens scored three runs, all charged to Alex Meyer in the eighth, to cap the scoring at 9-3.
Nate Hanson, Bernier and Ortiz each had two hits for the Red Wings, who dropped five of six games on this Ohio swing and have lost nine of their last 13 games since July 17.
