Binghamton Blasts Portland 10-1

Portland, Maine- Brahiam Maldonado blasted a grand slam and Jeurys Familila held the Sea Dogs to one hit over six innings as the Binghamton Mets defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 10-1 Friday night at Hadlock Field in front of 7,137 fans. The Binghamton win moves the Mets (54-71) one game ahead of the Sea Dogs (53-72) as the two team's battle for fifth place in the Eastern League's Eastern Division.

Familia (4-3) earned his fourth win holding the Sea Dogs to one hit over six shutout innings. The 21 year-old walked seven and struck out two in a dominant outing. Familia, the Mets 13th ranked prospect according to Baseball America was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2007.

Left fielder Maldonado provided Familia with plenty of run support when he launched a grand slam in the fifth inning off Eammon Portice. Maldonado's 24th home run of the season, second most in the league, gave the Mets a 6-0 lead. Dusty Ryan doubled to lead off the inning, Matt Den Dekker walked, and Jonathan Malo singled to set-up the Maldonado grand slam.

Portland starter Miguel Gonzalez (0-5) suffered the loss allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits in 4.2 innings.

Eric Campbell went 3-for-5 in the lop-sided B-Mets victory including a RBI single to center in the second to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Campbell and Dusty Ryan, 2-for-4, ripped back-to-back doubles in the seventh as the Mets extended the lead to 7-0.

The Mets struck for two more runs in the eighth off Blake Maxwell including a RBI triple by Niuman Romero.

Allan Dykstra connected for his 17th home run in the ninth.

Portland was finally able to plate a run in the eighth when Reynaldo Rodriguez singled home Jeremy Hazelbaker off reliever Jack Egbert. Hazelbaker had two of the five Portland hits including the lone hit off Familia. Alex Hassan extended his hit streak to eight games when he singled in the eighth.

Egbert tossed the final three innings yielding one run on four hits to earn his fourth save of the season.

The series will shift to Fenway Park in Boston on Saturday with a 1:05 PM game as the Sea Dogs participate in the Futures at Fenway event. Following the Sea Dogs game the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox will take on the Syracuse Chiefs at Fenway. Right-handed pitcher Charlie Haeger (2-0, 3.52) will get the start at Fenway for the Sea Dogs. He will be opposed by Binghamton righty Collin McHugh (6-2, 3.61). Tickets are good for both games and start at $5.00. Tickets are available and can be purchased through the Boston Red Sox.
