Fisher Cats Pitcher Joel Carreno Promoted to Blue Jays

Manchester, N.H.- The Toronto Blue Jays, parent club of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, have selected the contract of Fisher Cats pitcher Joel Carreno today. The 24-year old right-hander will serve as a relief pitcher out of the Blue Jays' bullpen. Carreno will become the 49th player to make his Major League Baseball debut after playing for the Fisher Cats and the ninth player to do so in 2011, following Tim Collins, Brad Emaus, Luis Perez, David Cooper, Trystan Magnuson, Eric Thames, Zach Stewart and Henderson Alvarez.

Carreno has made 23 starts for the Fisher Cats this season, posting a record of 7-9 with a 3.41 ERA in 134 and two-thirds innings pitched. The right-hander has held opposing batters to a league best .208 average against, while ranking second in strikeouts at 152 at the time of his promotion. His 10.18 strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio ranks third among league leaders.

A native of San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, Carreno was named an Eastern League All-Star in July after going 4-0 with a 1.14 ERA and 41 strikeouts over five starts (31.2 IP) in the month of May. He is the third Fisher Cats player to be promoted directly to the Blue Jays this season, joining fellow pitchers Zach Stewart (since traded to the Chicago White Sox) and Henderson Alvarez who is currently a member of the Toronto starting rotation.
