New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
(New Britain, CT)-Yan Gomes had two hits, including an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning and Yohan Pino went the distance, but the Fisher Cats dropped the opener of a three-game set in New Britain 3-1 on Friday night.
Pino (3-7), who pitched for the Rock Cats from 2007-2009 when he was in the Twins organization, allowed three runs (two earned) in eight innings. He allowed seven hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out six in his longest outing of the season.
New Britain's Brian Dozier hit a two-run homer in the top of the third inning to put the Rock Cats up 2-0. It was the first home run allowed by a New Hampshire pitcher since August 7 (89.2 innings).
The Rock Cats made it 3-0 in the top of the seventh when Evan Bigley singled and moved to second on an error. After Nathan Hansen bunted Bigley to third, Deibinson Romero singled.
Gomes knocked in the only New Hampshire (69-56) run with a single in the ninth inning after Danny Perales was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error on the play. Gomes has eight hits in 11 at bats in his last three games, including two home runs.
The Fisher Cats continue the series in New Britain on Saturday at 7:05pm. Coverage with Dick Lutsk begins with the OCE North America Pre-Game Show at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network. LHP Willie Collazo (1-0, 0.00) starts for New Hampshire against LHP Spencer Steedley (3-4, 4.67) for the Rock Cats.
The Fisher Cats return home on Monday (August 22) to open the final homestand of the regular season with a 7:05pm game against Trenton. An Atlas Fireworks Show will follow the game, fans can play USA Subs Baseball Bingo for great prizes, and it will be Hospitality Olympics Night as we pit local restaurants and hospitality organizations against each other in an Olympics style competition, sponsored by Performance Food Service NorthCenter. WMUR's Chronicle will celebrate its tenth anniversary.
