Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

PORTLAND, ME - Jeurys Familia struck out seven Portland Sea Dogs and Brahiam Maldonado launched Binghamton's second grand slam in two days to lead the B-Mets in the series opener by a 10-1 score at Hadlock Field tonight.

The B-Mets drew first blood in the second inning against starter Miguel Gonzalez. Brahiam Maldonado started the frame by shooting a bouncer to short. The chopper bounced off Ryan Dent's glove for his third error of the season.

The B-Mets outfielder stole second and advanced to third on Mike Fisher's single through the hole on the right side. Eric Campbell followed by rolling one up the middle to score Maldonado with the game's first run. After Dusty Ryan walked to load the bases, Niuman Romero plated Fisher with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Meanwhile, Familia dominated for the second straight start. The Dominican righty started off his 14th appearance with Binghamton by striking out leadoff hitter Jeremy Hazelbaker; the first of his seven strike outs. He retired the first seven he faced before walking Jon Hee in the third. Hazelbaker followed with a single, but Familia ended the threat by inducing Alex Hassan to fly out.

Binghamton's offense went quiet in the third and fourth, but came back with a vengeance in the fifth. Dusty Ryan led off with a line drive double to left field. Matt den Dekker worked out a walk after falling behind 0-2 and Jon Malo singled to load the bases.

Gonzalez's day came to close after he induced Juan Lagares to pop out to short on an infield fly. Eammon Portice entered with two outs and faced Brahiam Maldonado. The cleanup hitter launched a 2-1 offering from Portice over the Maine Monster in left field for Binghamton's second grand slam in as many days.

The B-Mets added to their lead with a run on back-to-back doubles by Campbell and Ryan in the sixth. Given the seven-run lead, Familia closed out his start on a high note. He breezed through the six, posting his fourth perfect inning. The righty allowed just one hit, walked two, and struck out seven over six shutout innings.

Binghamton never took their foot off the gas pedal. They posted two more runs on four hits against reliever Blake Maxwell in the eighth. Niuman Romero collected an RBI on his first B-Met triple and came home on Matt den Dekker's sac fly.

Jack Egbert took over for Familia in the seventh. He allowed the first two batters to reach, but escape unharmed. The Sea Dogs picked up their only run in the eighth. With Hazelbaker at third, Reynaldo Rodriguez beat out an infield single for his 28th RBI of the year.

Allan Dykstra capped Binghamton's offensive night by blasting a solo home run off Blake Maxwell in the ninth. It was the Californian's 17th home run; a new career high.

Egbert worked around an error in the ninth to post a scoreless inning and put a bow on the series-opening win. Familia picked up his fourth win and Gonzalez suffered his fifth loss as a Sea Dog.

Binghamton (54-71) and Portland heads down to Boston to take part in the Futures at Fenway Game tomorrow. RHP Collin McHugh (6-2, 3.61) will take on RHP Charlie Haeger (2-0, 3.52) with first pitch at 1:00pm. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 12:50pm on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
