Big Night All Around as Bisons Score 13-4 Win over Pawtucket
August 24, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
From the turnstiles to the scoreboard, everything was working at Coca-Cola Field Friday night.
Jonathan Davis homered and reached base five times as the Bisons blasted the PawSox, 13-4, in front of a Honda fridaynightbash! crowd of 16,153. Gunnar Heidt and Darnell Sweeney added home runs of their own and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits to raise his Bisons average to .373.
The Herd put up five 'crooked numbers' in an all-out assault on their IL North division rivals. They scored twice in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings before putting the game well out of reach with a five-run seventh, much to the delight of one of the largest crowds of the season.
Davis singled in the first and then again in the second with the later giving the Bisons their first lead of the game at 2-1. Then with the Herd up 4-3, the centerfielder blasted his fourth home run of the season to deep left-center off PawSox starter, Mike Shawaryn.
In the sixth Davis reached base after getting hit by reliever Matthew Gorst, and once aboard, used his speed to disrupt the Pawtucket defense. When Dwight Smith Jr. blooped a base hit into left, Davis raced for the extra bag at third. PawSox outfielder Tony Renda hurried the throw and the ball skipped past Ivan De Jesus Jr. covering the bag, allowing Davis to trot home for the Bisons seventh run.
Then in the seventh, Davis drove home one of the five Bisons runs with a single to right field. The Herd sent 10 men to the plate in the frame that included a two-run double from Michael De La Cruz and an RBI-triple from Roemon Fields.
Guerrero Jr. had three hits of his own and almost matched Davis with three RBI. Vlad Jr. had an run-scoring double in the fourth and a sac fly in the sixth. He also doubled in the first inning, but Davis was thrown out at the plate on a great 8-4-2 relay from the Red Sox.
The win for Buffalo went to Shawn Morimando, who scattered seven hits over five innings of work. A key for the southpaw is he didn't walk any PawSox batters in his outing.
Pawtucket did have 13 hits in the losing effort on Friday. Four of them came from former Bisons All-Star and 2004 Champion, Brandon Phillips, who was 4-5 with his 11th double of the season.
The Bisons now have just three home games left in 2018, starting with the Labatturday night Saturday.
