Pigs Roughed up in Series Opener

Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The celebration will have to wait another night.
The IronPigs could not contain an explosive Scranton/Wilkes-Barre offense on Friday, and dropped the opener of their four-game series 9-1. Lehigh Valley will still have three more chances to defeat the Railriders during this homestand, still needing only one win to clinch their first-ever IL North Division crown.
The Riders wasted no time jumping out to an early lead, when Mike Ford launched a two-run home run off of Tom Eshelman (2-13). Tom found stability for the next three innings, but got roughed up in the fifth, allowing five runs on five hits. Eshelman surrendered a final run in the sixth inning before calling it a night.
Inversely, Michael King delivered a masterful performance for the Yankees affiliate. King carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before allowing a leadoff double to Collin Cowgill. King (3-0) left the game in the seventh inning after collecting his seventh strikeout of the night, and eventually leaving Cowgill at second base. The Pigs eventually broke the shutout in the eighth inning when Danny Ortiz scored on a single by Ryan Goins.
Game Two of the series will feature Jerad Eickhoff on the mound for Lehigh Valley, making another Major League rehab assignment, presented by Good Shepherd Rehabilitation. Saturday is Salute to Philly Night with Philly themed fireworks Presented by St. Luke's University Health Network, and an appearance by the Phillie Phanatic. First Pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
The 2018 Season is the IronPigs' 11th season at Coca-Cola Park and 11th as the top affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.
