LOUISVILLE, KY. - Gabriel Guerrero singled home two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to complete the Louisville Bats' dramatic comeback over the Indianapolis Indians on Friday night. The Tribe led 4-1 entering the frame but dropped the 5-4 decision after Louisville's walk-off rally.
The Louisville (55-72) rally started with a pair of walks and a double by Hernan Iribarren. Jesus Liranzo was able to strikeout Taylor Sparks for the second out of the inning, but the bases remained loaded for Josh VanMeter who walked to force in a run. After an infield hit by Blake Trahan that plated Iribarren, Guerrero singled up the middle to score Steve Selsky and VanMeter to end the game.
The rally spoiled a gem by Tyler Eppler, who was in search of his 13th win of the season. Eppler worked six innings and allowed just one run in the no decision.
VanMeter scored the only run off Eppler when he opened the bottom of the first with a home run. It was the northeast Indiana native's 10th homer of the year.
Indianapolis (69-61) went to work for Eppler in the third. Eric Wood led off the inning with a solo blast that sailed over the left-field seats and onto the outfield concourse. Eppler followed with a double to right-center field, marking Eppler's first extra-base hit of his career. After Jordan Luplow walked, Jose Osuna clubbed a three-run homer to left field to extend the lead to 4-1.
After the third-inning rally, the Indians offense had just one significant rally. The first two batters reached in the inning but did not score. Friday's lost lead was the ninth blown save for the Tribe in the month of August.
Indy concludes its brief road series on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. The team returns to Victory Field on Sunday. To purchase tickets for any Indians home game, contact the Victory Field Box Office at 317-269-2282 or Tickets@IndyIndians.com. For more on the Tribe, visit IndyIndians.com.
