Hershey Bears News Release

Frederic Cassivi turned in perhaps his best performance of the season, leading the BEARS to a 3-0 shutout victory in Wilkes-Barre Friday night against the Penguins. The win helped HERSHEY tighten it's grip on home ice for the first round of the 2007 Calder Cup playoffs with nine games remaining.

While neither team would find the back in the first period, the intensity of the contest certainly was evident. Kip Brennan fought Dennis Bonvie at 5:10 of the first, slamming the former BEARS forward to the ice. Both teams had chances on the power play, and a Chris Bourque shot in a four-on-three broke the mask of Penguins goaltender Nolan Schaefer, knocking him out of the game for nearly five minutes. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton fired 10 shots at Frederic Cassivi in the first period, while Schaefer faced seven shots and Jeff Deslauriers two in Schaefer's absence.

Late in the second period, HERSHEY would finally be the team that found the scoresheet first. Brennan deflected a puck past Schaefer for his third goal of the season at 13:24. The Penguins outshot HERSHEY 10-9 in the second, but it was Bruce Boudreau's club that took the 1-0 lead to the dressing room after two periods.

Into the third period, the BEARS added a big goal midway through the final frame. Scott Barney tipped home his seventh goal of the season at 8:28 with help from Joey Tenute and Deryk Engelland. Quintin Laing would finish it off with an empty net goal at 19:39 from Dave Steckel. The win was HERSHEY'S 45th of the season, boosting the club's point total to 102 with nine games remaining. The BEARS trail first place Norfolk by one point with two games still in hand, and now lead the third place Penguins by four points with one game in hand.

Notes: The BEARS return home for a pair of games this weekend to end the month of March and begin April. Bridgeport provides the opposition Saturday night at 7:00 p.m., with the Penguins coming to call at GIANT Center Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are still available for both games through the GIANT Center box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911. The game for Giroux was his first for HERSHEY since March 11 in Bridgeport. Schaefer entered the game for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with an 8-2 record and a 1.96 goals against average since being acquired at the NHL trade deadline from San Jose. The 45 wins for the BEARS eclipsed last season's win total of 44. Kyle Wilson had his six-game point streak snapped in the game. The win was HERSHEY'S 22nd road win of the season, extending a franchise record for most road wins in a single season.
