Norfolk Admirals News Release
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Norfolk Admirals (48-18-6-1) used a four-goal outburst in the second period - including Jack Skille's first professional goal - to defeat the Philadelphia Phantoms (28-37-2-6) 5-1 on Friday night at the Wachovia Spectrum.
Norfolk led 1-0 when Adam Burish netted a shorthanded goal 12:30 into the game. Burish picked off a pass in the neutral zone and skated in alone on Phantoms' netminder Scott Munroe. He sent a forehand shot from the slot that hit Munroe and bounced a foot away from the goaltender. Burish then backhanded the rebound into the net for his tenth goal of the campaign.
The Admirals exploded for four goals in the second stanza. Kris Versteeg sent a pass from the right circle to the opposite ring where David Bolland one-timed the puck past Munroe at 7:19.
Just over five minutes later, Carl Corazzini collected a loose puck along the left half wall and darted across the goalmouth unchallenged. He deked a shot from the middle of the crease before lifting a wrister over Munroe's left leg at 12:25.
Norfolk went up 4-0 just thirty seconds later. Jonas Nordqvist fired a shot over Munroe and off the end boards. The puck caromed to a waiting Pierre Parenteau in the left faceoff circle. Parenteau one-timed the puck home at 12:55 to stretch his scoring streak to 11 games.
Following the Parenteau goal, the Phantoms replaced Munroe with Martin Houle in net. The first shot Houle saw came from Jack Skille, as the Admirals' newcomer dented the twine for his first pro goal. Skille sent a forehand wrister that beat Houle's left leg at 14:58.
The Phantoms ended Norfolk goaltender Corey Crawford's shutout bid when John Slaney scored with under two seconds left in the second period.
Crawford stopped all 12 shots in the final frame as the Admirals prevailed 5-1. Crawford ended with 29 saves on 30 shots in his 36th victory of the season. Scott Munroe (23 shots, 19 saves) got the loss as he played nearly 33 minutes. Martin Houle (11 shots, 10 saves) did not receive a decision.
Norfolk was 0-4 on the power play. Philadelphia was 0-3.
With 103 points, the Admirals now lead the East Division by one point over the Hershey Bears and five points over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Bears defeated the Penguins 3-0 today in Wilkes-Barre. Hershey has two games in hand on the Admirals while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has played one fewer game than the Norfolk.
The Admirals will head to Albany tomorrow night to face off against the River Rats at 7:00. They will return to Scope next week for a pair of critical games against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Wednesday and Friday night.
Wednesday night, the first 2,500 fans through the gates will receive an Admirals Frisbee courtesy of AAA Tidewater Virginia. Wednesday is also another BURGER KING® HAVE IT YOUR WAY® Wednesday.
