Adirondack Phantoms News Release

PHILADELPHIA - A four-goal second period fueled the Norfolk Admirals to a 5-1 win over the Philadelphia Phantoms on Friday night at the Wachovia Spectrum. John Slaney scored for the Phantoms, who remain eight points out of a playoff spot after losses for both Binghamton and Albany. Norfolk scored first, grabbing a goal during a Phantoms power play. Adam Burish jumped in front of a cross-ice pass at the Norfolk blue line and came in alone on Scott Munroe. The Phantoms netminder stopped the initial bid, but the rebound came right back to Burish and he poked It home for the 1-0 advantage with 8:30 remaining in the period. The Admirals took a commanding lead with four straight goals in the second period. First it was David Bolland, who took a cross-ice pass from Kris Versteeg in the left circle and one-timed it just inside the left post at 7:19. Then at 12:25, the Phantoms were carrying a puck down the right side boards through center when Dustin Byfuglien knocked it free at the Norfolk line and played it well ahead for Carl Corazzini. He got to the puck in the Philadelphia left-wing circle and swooped in front of Munroe, pushing it over the line before reinforcements could arrive. Thirty seconds later, Jonas Nordqvist fired a shot that went wide past the left post, but it bounced off the end boards right to Pierre Parenteau . He fired a shot just inside the far right-side post for the 4-0 lead. That ended the night of Munroe in favor of Martin Houle. The fifth Norfolk goal came at 14:58. Jack Skille picked up a loose puck in the right circle and arced into the slot before placing a wrist shot just inside the right post. Philadelphia finally got on the board with just 1.2 seconds left in the second period. There were several chances in front of the Norfolk net before a puck slid out of the pack and into the high slot. Slaney approached and put everything he had into a slapshot that made it through the traffic and past Corey Crawford, making the score 5-1 after two periods and giving Slaney a goal in three straight games. A scoreless third period led to the final. Munroe absorbed the loss with 19 saves on 23 shots, while Houle stopped 10 of 11 in relief. Crawford turned away 29 in taking home the win. Although the Phantoms remain eight points out of a playoff spot, time is growing thin with just seven games remaining in the season. Philadelphia will look to rebound on Saturday night in Binghamton against the Senators. The game will be carried on the Internet audio stream at www.610WIP.com, with Mike Thornton providing the play-by-play.
