Bears begin huge weekend Friday in Wilkes-Barre
March 30, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release
HERSHEY heads up I-81 Friday to square off with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, in what very well could be a 2007 Calder Cup Playoff preview. While the Penguins have not occupied first place for a single day this year, they are very much alive for a division championship with less than three weeks remaining in the regular season.
The BEARS are winners of five straight games heading into Friday's game at Wachovia Arena after a 3-1 win over Binghamton this past Sunday night. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton clobbered the Binghamton Senators 8-1 Wednesday to move within two points of the BEARS, and three points of the front-running Norfolk Admirals. While HERSHEY became the first team in the AHL to reach the 100-point plateau Sunday against Binghamton, Norfolk's 6-2 win Wednesday over Philadelphia in Hampton Roads placed the Admirals back in first place with 101 points. The Penguins have 98 points entering play Friday, with HERSHEY holding one game in hand on the flightless birds, and two games in hand on Norfolk.
Friday's game at Wachovia is the first of four remaining games head-to-head between the BEARS and Penguins, with each team hosting a pair of games at home. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will visit GIANT Center Sunday afternoon at 5:00 p.m., and again on Sunday, April 8 before the BEARS wrap up the 10-game season set on Friday, April 13 in northeast PA.
Elsewhere in the East Division Friday night, the Albany River Rats face a stiff test when the host the Manchester Monarchs at Times Union Center. Bridgeport, currently tied with Albany with 72 points, host the Hartford Wolf Pack at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Both the River Rats and Sound Tigers each have 10 games remaining entering play Friday. Binghamton is on the road in Syracuse to face the Crunch, while Norfolk travels to Philadelphia to play the Phantoms at the corner of Broad Street and Pattison Avenue. Face-off at the Wachovia Spectrum Friday is at 7:05 p.m.
Friday's game can be heard via the BEARS Radio Network (100.1 FM, 1490-AM and 960-AM) beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m. John Walton and injured right wing Pete Vandermeer have the call of the game from Wachovia Arena. The game can also be seen via B2 Networks through HersheyBears.com, and can be heard worldwide through Pennlive.com and WHYLRadio.com. Tickets still remain for both home games this weekend for HERSHEY, as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers invade Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. prior to the arrival of the Penguins Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the GIANT Center box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911.
