Iowa Chops News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars welcomed the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights to Wells Fargo Arena for American Hockey League action on Friday evening. The Stars dropped a hard-fought battle 3-1 to the visiting Knights but were able to maintain their two point lead over Peoria. By virtue of the Peoria Rivermen's 6-3 loss in Houston, the Stars remain in fourth place and the final playoff spot in the West Division. Iowa is also just one point behind Grand Rapids for the crossover position in the North Division.

The Knights jumped-out to the 1-0 lead midway through the opening period. Center Chris Neiszner was able to tap-in a loose puck on the Iowa doorstep at the 12:02 mark. The Knights expanded their lead to 2-0 with a goal late in the period. Iowa netminder Dan Ellis played the puck carrier Tim Ramholt to the left-side of the net, but Ramholt pulled Ellis out and found a streaking Carsen Germyn down the middle of the ice for an open-net goal. Germyn's goal came with 1:15 left in the period.

The Stars and Knights played a physical second period, with each team dishing out their fair share of hits. The turning point of the period came when Iowa Forward Konstantin Pushkarev was whistled for a five-minute major at the 8:18 mark. Shortly thereafter, the Stars found themselves down two men and having to kill-off a five-on-three Omaha power-play. After a successful kill of the two-man advantage, Iowa had just nine second left in the five minute major. When it looked like Iowa would kill the penalty, Omaha's Warren Peters grabbed the loose puck, banked it off a skate in front. The puck found its way between the legs of Dan Ellis and the back of the Iowa goal at the 13:10 mark.

Rookie Forward Paul Szczechura spoiled the shutout for Omaha Goalie Brent Krahn at the 6:47 mark of the third period. Fellow rookie Chris Conner streaked down the left boards and gave a centering pass to a cutting Szczechura who redirected the puck past Krahn. Despite several chances to light the lamp in the remaining 13 minutes, Iowa was unable to do so. Iowa out-shot the Knights 14 to three in the period as the Knights held on for the win.
