Durham Bulls News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Bulls starting pitcher Shane Baz matched a career-high with ten strikeouts, retiring fifteen of seventeen batters faced, and second baseman Vidal Brujan tripled and scored a run, while Jumbo Shrimp shortstop Deven Marrero lined a game-winning single in the tenth inning of Jacksonville's 3-2 extra-inning win over Durham on Sunday evening at 121 Financial Ballpark.
Baz (5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K) finished on a high note, setting down each of the final 12 batters he faced. In three starts with the Bulls since being promoted from Double-A Montgomery he owns a 1-0 record and 1.29 ERA (2 ER/14.0 IP) with three walks and 20 strikeouts. His ten punchouts on Sunday evening matched a single-game career-high set earlier this season on May 28 with Montgomery.
Bulls reliever Brian Moran (1.1 IP) followed Baz by setting down all four batters he faced, while lefty Ryan Sherriff (1.0 IP, 2 K) also tossed a perfect frame. Jumbo Shrimp reliever Steven Okert (2.0 IP, 5 K) earned the win while Durham righty Sean Poppen (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 K) suffered the defeat.
Brujan bashed his triple to right on the first pitch of the game before coming across on CF Nathan Lukes' RBI double. Lukes later scored on an error as part of LF Josh Lowe's infield single. Jacksonville would narrow the deficit to one in the seventh on 3B Isan Diaz's solo homer in the seventh before 1B Lewin Diaz's game-tying RBI double in the ninth forced the extra frame. Marrero one inning later would line his game-winning two-out single up the middle to score pinch runner Santiago Chavez from second.
Following a league-wide off day on Monday, the Bulls are scheduled to return to Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday, June 29 to start a six-game series with the Gwinnett Stripers. First pitch of that game is slated for 6:35pm ET, with starting pitchers for both teams not yet announced. Tickets for that game and all remaining Bulls home games are now available at durhambulls.com.
