St. Paul Saints News Release

COLUMBUS, OH - The St. Paul Saints were trying to at least get a split of the series against the Columbus Clippers. Unfortunately, a four run fifth inning proved to be the difference as the Saints lost 8-6 on Sunday afternoon at Huntington Park.

The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second when Mark Contreras led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. With two outs, Sherman Johnson knocked home Contreras with a double to the gap in right-center.

In the bottom of the second the Clippers wasted little time taking the lead. Major League rehabber, Franmil Reyes, led off the inning by blasting a solo homer to left tying the game at one. With one out Gabriel Arias singled to left and scored on a double by Nolan Jones to make it 2-1. Jones stole third and scored on a double by Trenton Brooks to make it 3-1.

The Saints got a couple of gifts in the third that helped them regain the lead. With one out, JT Riddle hit a slow chopper to second that Andres Gimenez charged, fielded, but had the ball slip out of his hand as he went to throw and Riddle reached on the error. Brent Rooker reached base safely in his 15th consecutive game with a walk. Willians Astudillo's ground ball to the right side was snared by a diving Brooks at first, but his throw to second went into left field that allowed Riddle to score and put runners at second and third. Mark Contreras continued his hot hitting with a two-run single to left that put the Saints up 4-3.

In the fifth, the Clippers put up a four spot as Andres Gimenez led off with a double to right and scored on an RBI single from Major League rehabber, Roberto Perez, tying the game at four. After starter Chandler Shepherd struck out Reyes, Ian Gibaut came on in relief. With two outs, Arias singled to left and Jones followed with a three-run homer to right-center, his fourth of the season, putting the Clippers up 7-4.

The Saints continued to show fight in the top of the sixth when Contreras walked with one out and Damek Tomscha blasted a two-run homer to left, his sixth of the season, to get the Saints within one at 7-6.

The Clippers added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Arias led off the inning with a bloop double to shallow right-center. With one out, Trenton Brooks hit a ground ball off of pitcher Juan Minaya that put runners at the corners. An RBI single to left by Connor Marabell scored Arias to make it 8-6.

The Saints have Monday off and begin a six-game series against the Omaha Storm Chasers on Tuesday at CHS Field at 7:05 p.m. Both teams are TBA. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities, and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
