Chesapeake Baysox News Release

BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie Baysox welcome 3B Josh Bell and P Steve Johnson to the roster, after both players were acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Baltimore Orioles closer George Sherrill. Johnson will start this afternoon's game against the New Britain Rock Cats.

Bell entered the season ranked as the Dodgers' eighth best prospect by Baseball America. He was also rated as the best power hitting prospect in the organization. The switch-hitting Bell was drafted by the Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2005 First Year Player Draft out of Santaluces High School in Fla. This year Bell played in 94 games for Chattanooga, the Dodger's Class AA affiliate, batting .296 with 30 doubles, 11 home runs and 52 RBI.

Joining Bell with the Baysox is Baltimore native and St. Paul's High School graduate RHP Steve Johnson. Johnson is the son of former Oriole and current Oriole broadcaster Dave Johnson. He entered the season ranked as the Dodgers' 15th best prospect by Baseball America. Johnson was 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA in two starts for Chattanooga this year, and 8-4 with a save in 18 games with the Class A+ Inland Empire. In 2007, Johnson led all Dodgers minor leaguers with 12 wins and started the Midwest League All-Star game. Johnson is expected to join the Baysox starting rotation, joining fellow Baltimore native RHP Brandon Erbe. The two pitched against each other in high school. Johnson was drafted by the Dodgers in the 13th round of the 2005 First Year Player Draft.
