Chesapeake Baysox News Release

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Jonathan Tucker had a pair of extra-base hits but the bullpen allowed three home runs in a 6-2 loss to New Britain Sunday. While the Baysox welcomed two new players to the organization, the weather forced the teams to sit through a two-hour rain delay in the top of the fifth inning.

Right-handed pitcher Steve Johnson took the mound on his first day on the roster. Acquired from the Dodgers Friday along with third baseman Josh Bell in exchange for Orioles closer George Sherrill, Johnson was making his third start at the AA level. After retiring the Rock Cats in order in the bottom of the first inning, he allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Brian Dinkelman drew a one-out walk and stole second base. Steve Singleton drove him in with a double to center field and scored on a single by Steve Singleton to put the Rock Cats up 2-0.

Tucker cut the lead in half with a solo home run to left field to lead off the fourth inning. It was his first home run of the season and the Baysox second hit of the game. The rains came in the fifth inning, cutting Johnson's start short. When play resumed in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Baysox turned the game over to right-handed reliever Fredy Deza.

Deza retired the Rock Cats in order in the fifth inning, but allowed back-to-back solo home runs to Erik Lis and Dinkelman to increase New Britain's lead to 4-1. Fellow relievers John Mariotti and James Hoey wouldn't fare much better, Mariotti allowed a solo home run to Matt Moses in the bottom of the seventh inning and Hoey allowed a run on a sacrifice fly by Luke Hughes in the eighth. By the time the Baysox came up to bat in the top of the ninth, they were trailing 6-1.

Tucker got things going in the ninth inning with a leadoff double to center field. Center fielder Daniel Figueroa followed with an RBI single to center field. Second baseman Miguel Abreu hit a two-out single to center field to put runners on first and second, and New Britain went to closer Anthony Slama. Slama induced a groundball off the bat of designated hitter Paco Figueroa to record his 23rd save.

With the loss, the Baysox fall to 58-50 on the season, and fall to fourth place in the Southern Division. The Baysox will head to New Hampshire to open a three-game series with the Fisher Cats Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Ryohei Tanaka (1-1, 1.80 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Baysox, he will go up against RHP Randy Boone (8-5, 3.44 ERA).
