CURVE/TRENTON SERIES: The Altoona Curve and Trenton Thunder (AA- New York Yankees) conclude a three game series tonight at Blair County Ballpark. The two time defending Eastern League Champions swept the Curve at Waterfront Park in Trenton in a three game set from 5/29-5/31. The two teams will meet for one more series at BCB from 8/25-8/27. LAST TIME OUT: The Curve snapped a six game losing streak to the Thunder with an 8-4 win Saturday. Newly acquired prospect Tim Alderson had a strong outing in his Curve debut picking up his seventh Eastern League win of the season
FOR ALTOONA: RHP Yoslan Herrera will make his 19th appearance of the season and his 13th start. Herrera enters tonight's contest undefeated and is red hot coming into his first start against the Thunder this season. In two of his last three starts he has tossed 7.0 shutout innings allowing seven hits in a 7-1 win over Harrisburg on 7/ 16 and threw 4.0 scoreless innings before having to exit due to a rain delay against Reading on 7/21. Herrera made one start against Trenton in 2008 and ended up on the losing end of his start on 5/26/08. Herrera, a native of Pinar Del Rio, Cuba was signed by Pittsburgh as a non-drafted free agent in December 2006. Last season, Herrera made six starts for Pittsburgh, compiling a 1-1 record with a 9.82 ERA.
FOR TRENTON: RHP Ryan Pope gets the start for the Thunder in tonight's series finale. Pope will be making his 19th start (20th appearance) of the 2009 season. Pope recently had his longest start of the season in an 8.0 inning outing where he allowed no runs and just three hits while striking out seven at New Hampshire on 7/22. Pope was the Yankees third round draft pick in the 2007 draft out of Savannah College of Arts and Design where he is the first player to ever be drafted into the Major Leagues from.
PROSPEROUS PETEY: Pirates No. 1 prospect Pedro Alvarez continues to impress as the 22-year old from New York hit his seventh Double-A home run of the season and his 21st overall homer last night. This after Alvarez went 3-for-4 Friday. Alvarez has now raised his batting average from .143 to .308 in the last month slugging five home runs with 16 RBIs and hitting .359 since 7/3.
DELANEY DELIVERS: Jason Delaney had his second consecutive multi-hit game Saturday to bust out of a 1-for-18 slump and is now hitting .600 (6x10) over his last three games while still retaining the team lead in RBIs with 46.
BULL DURHAM: 1B Miles Durham is now riding a 10 game hitting streak, his second longest this season behind a 12 game streak he had with the Lynchburg Hillcats (A-Advanced) from 5/22 to 6/3. Durham has also hit in the last 17 consecutive games he has started. He has raised his batting average from .273 to .309 since 7/12 and has had five multi hit games including a 2-for-4 effort Tuesday.
