Trenton Thunder News Release
(Altoona, PA)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that Catcher Jesus Montero has been placed on the Disabled List. Catcher P.J. Pilittere has been transferred from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to Trenton. Montero sustained a broken middle finger on his left hand during Trenton's game against Altoona last night from Blair County Ballpark.
Montero entered the 2009 season as the second best prospect in the Yankees Minor League System according to Baseball America. He had a .317 BA for Trenton with nine home runs and 33 RBI in 44 games. Montero played in the Eastern League All-Star Game, and the XM Futures Game at Busch Stadium this season. He was promoted from Tampa (High-A) to Trenton on June 3rd. He hit .356 in 48 games for Tampa with eight home runs and 37 RBI. In 2008, he hit .326 with 17 home runs and 87 RBI for Charleston (Low-A) in the South Atlantic League. He led the South Atlantic League in hits, and ranked third among all Single-A batters in hits. He was selected to the mid-season All-Star team and the South Atlantic League's post-season All-Star team. He was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on 10/17/06.
Pilittere has played in 28 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A) this season, and has a .244 BA with one home run and nine RBI. In 2008, he appeared in 97 games for the Thunder, and batted .277 with three home runs and 48 RBI. He was selected to the Eastern League All-Star game, and led the Thunder to the Eastern League Championship. In 2007, he appeared in a career-high 100 games for the Thunder and hit .261 with two home runs and 34 RBI. Pilittere was originally selected in the 13th round of the 2004 draft from Cal-State Fullerton. He led Cal-State Fullerton to the 2004 College World Series Title.
Trenton and Altoona play the rubber game of their three-game series on Sunday night from Blair County Ballpark. RHP Ryan Pope (4-8, 5.40) will start for Trenton against Altoona RHP Yoslan Herrera (7-0, 3.33). Game time is set for 6:05 p.m.
