About Last Night...The Aeros rolled to their second straight win over Binghamton and sixth overall last night, doubling up the B-Mets 8-4 in front of 2,814 fans at NYSEG Stadium. SS Carlos Rivero belted a grand slam in the top of the third to give Akron an insurmountable 6-0 lead (after Binghamton intentionally walked RF John Drennen to get to Rivero), and also became the third Aero this season to homer in three consecutive games (Nick Weglarz June 23rd-25th and Carlos Santana in a franchise record-tying four straight games July 24th-27th). Akron also got a quality start from LHP Ryan Edell, who blanked Binghamton for six innings while improving to 4-1 and earning back-to-back wins for the first time all season. The former College of Charleston star also lowered his ERA to 2.32 on the year, and now ranks second in the league in both ERA and strikeouts (91).
Carlos in Charge...Rivero, the slick-fielding shortstop who didn't turn 21 until six weeks into the season, has made steady progress as an offensive performer since struggling throughout the first half of the season. The native of Barquisimeto, VZ was under the .200 mark as late as June 28th, and batted only .220 prior to the All-Star break. Rivero is batting .246 since the break however, and just finished July with a .264 mark in 30 games. He has also clubbed four homers and driven in 15 runs thus far in the second half, after having one homer and 25 RBI in the first half. He has also gone 22 straight games without an error, and continues to lead all Eastern League shortstops with a .976 fielding percentage. If he can continue on that pace, Rivero would break Ivan Ochoa's franchise record of a .970 fielding percentage set in 2005.
Four Hit Wonder...1B Beau Mills is also on a second-half tear, and this season is shaping up much like last year did as the native of Visalia, CA claimed Carolina League MVP honors for Class A Kinston. Mills finished 4-5 last night and also got Akron on the board with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the first. It was his first four-hit game as an Aero and first four-hit performance overall since last July 7th for the K-Tribe, and also marked his 32nd multi-hit game for Akron this season. Mills, who leads the club in multi-hit games, was batting .247 at the end of May with just four homers and 19 RBI. He then exploded with 21 ribbies in June alone, and followed that by batting .283 with four homers and 15 RBI in July. Last season, Mills batted .264 with five homers and 31 RBI in April and May, compared to .312 with 16 home runs and 57 RBI the rest of the year. The season, he hit .247 with four homers and 19 RBI in the first two months, but is batting .290 with six homers and 38 RBI since June 1st. His .270 batting average entering play tonight is his highest since it was .272 on June 17th.
Did You Know...A win tonight would not only match Akron's season-high of seven straight wins, but would also get the Aeros back to their high water mark of 27 games over .500, which was last set July 5th.
