Altoona Takes Rubber Match from Trenton

(Altoona, PA)- Altoona Shortstop Ray Chang hit a home run, and had two doubles, as the Curve defeated the Thunder 7-5 on Sunday night from Blair County Ballpark in Altoona, PA. The Curve won the rubber game of the three-game series. Trenton has dropped eight its last 11 games.

Trenton took 1-0 lead in the first inning. Shortstop Eduardo Nunez doubled with one out in the first inning against Altoona Starting Pitcher Yoslan Herrera (8-0). First baseman Chris Malec followed with a single to advance Nunez to third base. Center fielder Richie Robnett drove Nunez home with an RBI single. Altoona (44-65) responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. With two outs in the frame and Shortstop Ray Chang at second base, First baseman Jason Delaney connected on an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. Right fielder Miles Durham then reached on an infield single to move Delaney to third base. The inning continued as an error by Shortstop Eduardo Nunez allowed Delaney to score and give the Curve a 2-1 lead. Second baseman Pedro Lopez capped off the scoring in the inning with a two-run double to make it 4-1.

The Thunder scored two runs in the top of the third inning. Malec had a fielder's choice RBI in the inning, and Outfielder Edwar Gonzalez picked up an RBI groundout. Altoona countered with a run in the bottom of third inning on an RBI single by Third baseman Angel Gonzalez to increase lead back to 5-3. The two teams traded runs in the fourth inning. Nunez had an RBI single for the Thunder, and Altoona Shortstop Ray Chang hit his first home run of the season in the bottom half of the frame. Angel Gonzalez tacked on another run for the Curve in the seventh inning, on a two-out RBI single off of Thunder Reliever Kanekoa Texeira. Nunez hit a solo home run in the ninth inning off of Altoona Reliever Scott Nestor. The home run was his seventh of the season. Nunez had three hits in the loss.

Herrera scattered 10 hits over six innings, and yielded four runs (three earned). He struck out four and walked one. He picked up his second career win against the Thunder. Pope allowed eight hits and six runs (three earned) to take the loss. He struck out three and walked three. Outfielder Richie Robnett had three hits in the loss for the Thunder. Chang went 3 x 4 with two runs and two doubles for the Curve in the win. The Curve had four players with multi-hit games in the win, including Chang.

Trenton is off on Monday. The Thunder start a three-game series against the Reading Philies at First Energy Stadium on Tuesday night. LHP Wilkin De La Rosa (3-5, 4.13) will start for Trenton against RHP Mike Stutes (8-5, 3.79). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
