New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Norwich, CT- Adam Calderone went 3-for-3, hit his 12th home run and added his team-leading 12th outfield assist, but the Connecticut Defenders completed a three-game sweep of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats with an 8-3 victory at Dodd Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Calderone (3-for-3, HR, BB) erased a 1-0 deficit for New Hampshire (49-59) when he launched an 0-2 pitch from Garrett Broshuis inside the right field foul pole with two outs in the top of the fourth, tying the game 1-1.
Scott Campbell (1-for-5, 2 RBI) lined a two-out, two-run single off Broshuis in the top of the fifth inning that snapped the 1-1 tie and gave the Fisher Cats a 3-1 lead, the first multi-run lead for either team in the tightly-contested series. Brian Jeroloman (1-for-3, BB, R) and Nick Gorneault (1-for-4, R), who both singled, scored on the Campbell single, which gave him his 12th and 13th RBIs of the season.
The Defenders (63-45) roared back by putting five runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth against Luis Perez, all after there were two outs. Brett Pill (2-for-3, HBP, RBI, R) singled home Jackson Williams (double) for his league-leading 78th RBI. After Eddy Martinez-Esteve (0-for-2, 2 BB, R) drew a walk, Mike Mooney (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R) hammered a two-run double to the left-centerfield gap, and Brandon Crawford (2-for-4, HR, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R) capped the inning with a drive to right that got past the diving Gorneault, rolling to the wall for a two-run, inside-the-park home run, his 3rd, giving the Defenders a 6-3 lead.
It was the first inside-the-park homer against New Hampshire since now-Pittsburgh Pirate Andrew McCutcheon hit one for the Altoona Curve on August 5, 2007.
Williams (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R) finished the scoring with a two-run single off reliever Leon Boyd in the bottom of the eighth, as Connecticut swept the three-game weekend series.
Broshuis (3-2), who was making his 16th career start against the Fisher Cats, earned the win by allowing three runs on five hits in 5.2 innings. The right-hander walked one and fanned two.
Perez (7-9) suffered his team-leading ninth loss after giving up six runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings with two strikeouts and three walks. The left-hander moved into the league lead in innings pitched with 124.2.
For the third straight game, Connecticut took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Eastern League-leading hitter Brock Bond (2-for-5, 2 2B, R) doubled to center, extending his hitting streak to 16 games. Mike McBryde (2-for4, BB) and Pill followed with infield singles, loading the bases, and Bond scored his league-leading 71st run when Perez induced a double-play grounder from Martinez-Esteve.
Following an off-day on Monday, the Fisher Cats open a three-game series against the Bowie Baysox, Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, Tuesday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium with a 7:05pm game. Right-hander Randy Boone (8-5, 3.44) bids to become New Hampshire's first nine-game winner when he opposes Bowie righty Ryohei Tanaka (1-1, 1.58). Radio coverage begins at 6:45pm with the BayRing Pre-Game Show with Bob Lipman and Mike Murphy on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
On Tuesday night, a pre-game parade and ceremony will honor the participants in the Fidelity Hit the Books Summer Reading Program. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
