Portland, Maine- The Bowie Baysox got timely hitting as they defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 4-3 Thursday afternoon at Hadlock Field in front of 6,874. The Baysox (61-50) take the series winning two of the three games. The Sea Dogs fall to a season low five games below .500 at 53-58.
For the second straight game, the Sea Dogs lacked timely hitting going 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position on Thursday. On Wednesday, the Sea Dogs were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Portland managed to out hit the Baysox on Thursday 11-9 but failed to get the big hit.
Bowie jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning off Portland starter Jeremy Kehrt. Ryan Adams got the scoring started with his Eastern League leading 38th double scoring Greg Miclat. Brandon Waring chipped in with a RBI single.
Waring led the Bowie offense with a three hit performance. He added another RBI single in the fifth inning extending the Baysox lead to 4-1. The hit would eventually prove to be the game winner.
Kehrt (2-9) suffered his ninth loss of the season surrendering four runs on six hits in five innings, yielding four walks. Ryne Lawson and Eammon Portice combined to toss four innings of scoreless relief scattering three hits and three walks.
Nate Spears led the Portland offense with a 3-for-5 performance including two doubles and two RBI. His two run double in sixth inning brought the Sea Dogs within a run at 4-3.
Bowie used five pitchers to hold the Sea Dogs to three runs. Bowie starter Pedro Viola lasted four innings yielding one run on five hits. Chad Thall (2-0) picked up the win tossing 1.1 shutout innings allowing just one hit. Pedro Beato earned his 13th save pitching a perfect ninth.
The Portland Sea Dogs will have their first ever meeting with the Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants) on Friday night at 7:00 PM at Hadlock Field. Red Sox top pitching prospect Casey Kelly (3-5) is scheduled to start for the Sea Dogs. Right-handed pitcher David Mixon (10-6) will get the nod for the Flying Squirrels.
