New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - Erie jumped on Tyler Robertson from the first pitch, which Cale Iorg blasted out of the ballpark, and never looked back as the Seawolves downed the Rock Cats, 7-4 to avoid a three-game sweep.
Iorg led off the first inning by sending Robertson's first pitch over the left field wall for an early 1-0 lead. Brandon Douglas and Brandon Jones followed with consecutive singles and Robertson plunked Rawley Bishop with a pitch to load the bases. Robertson struck out the next batter to record the first out of the inning before he forced Kody Kaiser hit a grounder to shortstop Estarlin De Los Santos that appeared to be an inning-ending double play. Kaiser scored on the error and Bishop ended up at second to put both runners in scoring position. Bryan Pounds then lined a two-run single into right field to extend the lead, 4-0.
In the bottom of the inning, the Rock Cats took advantage of a couple of miscues by Erie. Steve Singleton was hit by a pitch with one out, moved to third on Chris Parmelee's single, and scored on an error by Iorg at short. The `Cats cut Erie's lead in half in the third. De Los Santos led off the inning and was hit by a pitch and Singleton followed with a single. Parmelee then grounded into a force out that retired Singleton at second but another throwing error by Iorg allowed De Los Santos to cross the plate.
Erie got to Robertson again in the fourth with back-to-back RBI singles by Nowlin and Kaiser to put the Seawolves ahead, 6-2.
Erik Lis led off the bottom of the sixth with a homer over the right field wall to cut the lead on half once again. In the following inning, Parmelee drove in Chris Cates with a sacrifice fly to left that brought the `Cats within two runs.
Anthony Shawler (3-2) picked up the win for Erie, allowing two earned runs (4 R) on six hits in seven innings. He struck out five. Lester Oliveros came on in the ninth to close out the game and ran into trouble but escaped the jam by striking out Parmelee with two men on and two outs. Oliveros notched his fifth save with the scoreless ninth.
Robertson (2-11) lasted just four innings, allowing six runs - three earned - on eight hits. Steve Hirschfeld struck out four in two shutout innings out of the bullpen in his first appearance with the Rock Cats since returning from the disabled list.
