Chesapeake Baysox News Release
PORTLAND, Maine - Bowie Baysox closer Pedro Beato protected a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning as Bowie topped the Portland Sea Dogs 4-3 Thursday afternoon in Portland. Beato, pitching in consecutive games for the third time this season, recorded his team-leading 13th save by retiring the Sea Dogs in order. It was the only inning the Baysox retired the Sea Dogs in order.
After recording 33 hits and 10 walks through the first two games of the series, the Baysox tallied nine more hits and seven walks in the matinee. Baysox designated hitter Ryan Adams went 2-for-4 with two doubles, tying Rick Short (2000) and Oscar Salazar (2007) for the team record with 39 two-baggers.
With the victory, the Baysox improve to 61-50, a season-high 11 games over .500. The Baysox have not lost a series since being swept by the Erie SeaWolves July 5 through July 8, in Erie, Pa. The Baysox remain in second place in the Western Division, 3.5 games behind the Altoona Curve and 3.0 games in front of the Harrisburg Senators. Both the Curve and the Senators play games Thursday night.
Bowie jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Shortstop Greg Miclat led off with a single to center field and scored when Adams followed with a double to center. Brandon Waring plated Adams with a two-out single to left field to put Bowie in front 2-0. The Baysox had a chance to extend the lead after right fielder Jonathan Tucker walked and center fielder Danny Figueroa was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs, but catcher Adam Donachie flew out to end the inning.
The Baysox added another run in the second inning but squandered an opportunity to break the game open. Second baseman Carlos Rojas and Miclat drew walks to open the inning and Adams was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Left fielder Tyler Henson lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Rojas, but when the throw was not cut off, Miclat attempted to take third base on the play and was throw out by catcher William Vazquez. First baseman Joel Guzman followed with a single to put runners on first and second before third baseman Brandon Waring grounded out to end the inning with the Baysox up 3-0.
Baysox starter Pedro Viola worked out of trouble several times in the early innings. He struck out Portland first baseman Matt Rizzo to open the second inning, but the third strike was a wild pitch and Rizzo reached first safely. Jorge Padron singled to right field to put runners on first and third with nobody out but Viola worked out of the jam with a fly out, a walk, a strikeout and a line out to center field.
Viola found himself in another tough spot in the bottom of the third inning. Nate Spears led off with a single to center field and Viola hit Ray Chang with a pitch to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Both runners advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch, but Viola induced a fly out and a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning without allowing a run.
The left-hander allowed a runner to reach third base with nobody out for the third consecutive inning in the bottom of the fourth. Ryan Khoury led off with a bunt single and moved to third on a single by Chih-Hsien Chiang. Vazquez lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to put Portland on the board. Chiang stole second base with one out and moved to third when Donachie's throw sailed into center field. Chiang was stranded at third base after Viola recorded a ground out and a strikeout.
The Baysox added another run in the top of the fifth inning. Guzman led off the frame with a double to left field and scored on a single by Waring. Waring moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tucker but was stranded at second base with Bowie up 4-1. Waring had three hits in the contest, finishing 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Portland responded with a pair of runs off Baysox reliever Ryohei Tanaka in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tanaka worked a scoreless fifth inning of relief before running into trouble in the sixth inning. Khoury led off with a single to center field but was retired at second base on a fielder's choice by Chiang. Tanaka recorded a fly out before Che-Hsuan Lin singled to left field to put runners on first and second with two outs. After Portland started the game going 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, both runners scored when Spears lined a double down the left field line to cut the Baysox lead to 4-3.
Tanaka walked the first batter he faced in the bottom of the seventh inning and was relieved by left-hander Chad Thall. After recording a fly out, Thall allowed a single to Padron to put runners on first second with one out before inducing a double play to end the inning. Thall retired the only batter he faced in the bottom of the eighth inning, recording 1.1 scoreless innings of relief. Jose Diaz relieved Thall and worked two-thirds of an inning of scoreless baseball. Beato worked a scoreless ninth inning to seal the victory.
Thall was credited with the win, improving his record to 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA on the season.
The Baysox open a three-game set in the Granite State against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Friday night. They return home Tuesday, August 10, for three games with the Sea Dogs.
