HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Bowie Baysox lost 2-1 to the Harrisburg Senators Tuesday night, a game marked by maddening futility for Bowie with runners in scoring position. The Baysox were able to put a runner in scoring position in seven of the game's innings, but scored only one run.
Baysox starting pitcher Tim Bascom took the loss and was knocked around for eight hits through 5.0 innings, but limited the damage to just two runs, as he fanned four batters and walked one.
Though the lack of clutch hitting was frustrating, the Baysox can find positives in another solid game defensively, as they committed no errors for the second game in a row. Fielding mistakes have been a crucial flaw in the team this year, as they have committed 49 errors through 45 games, second-most in the Eastern League.
Leadoff hitter Matt Angle got aboard to open the game with a single grounded up the middle of the diamond. After extending his Eastern League-best hit streak to 16 games, he stole second base. It was his fifth steal of the year, moving him to second on the Baysox steals leaderboard, behind fellow outfielder Jonathan Tucker.
Angle has been one of the most dynamic players on the club in recent weeks, since coming off the disabled list for a broken hamate bone he suffered at the end of spring training. He is 17-for-49 (.347) in his first 11 games back with seven runs scored and six RBI. Angle has shown a knack for precision bunting and put his considerable speed to use both on the base paths and in center field, where he has shown tremendous range so far. In Monday's opening game against Harrisburg, he got the Baysox going quickly with a leadoff home run.
He moved to third base on second baseman Ryan Adams's ground out to third, but was stranded as designated hitter Joel Guzman grounded out to second base to end the inning.
The Senators put runners on the corners with back-to-back one-out singles in the bottom of the third inning. A sacrifice fly by designated hitter Jesus Valdez into foul territory plated outfielder Brad Coon from third to open a 1-0 Senators lead.
Two more consecutive one-out singles in the bottom of the fourth set up the same situation put Edgardo Baez and Michael Martinez on first and third base. This time, catcher Sean Rooney hit a double to center to send Martinez across the plate to double the home side's lead.
The Baysox cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth inning, which opened with a throwing error by Senators shortstop Danny Espinosa that allowed Guzman to reach first safely. Brandon Waring followed with a base hit up the middle but was soon forced out when first baseman Robbie Widlansky grounded into a double play that moved Guzman to third. Left fielder Tyler Henson singled up the middle to score Guzman for his 24th RBI of the year.
Bowie missed a golden opportunity to tie the game in the top of the eighth. With Waring and Widlansky on first and second with two outs, Manager Brad Komminsk sent catcher Caleb Joseph in to pinch hit for Steve Lerud and face lefty reliever Chuck James. It was a sound move by Komminsk, as Joseph has dominated left-handed pitching all season, with a .425 average against southpaws going into tonight's contest. Unfortunately, Joseph could not deliver any runs to follow his three-RBI game on Monday, as he flied out to right field.
The game ended with the Baysox making one last, desperate bid to score. Shortstop Carlos Rojas walked to open the ninth inning and took second on a wild pitch with one out. Tucker struck out for the second out, but Adams hit a single to Espinosa at short. Rojas rounded third and headed home, determined to tie the game up. He pushed his luck a bit too far, though, as he got caught in a run down between the catcher and third baseman and was tagged out for the game's final out.
The loss drops the Baysox to 22-23, where they are tied with the Senators for fourth place in the Eastern League's Western Division, seven games out of first.
The Baysox hope to bounce back in game three of the four-game set Thursday, at 7 p.m. After this series, the team will head to Richmond for four more games with the Flying Squirrels.
They return to Bowie on Tuesday, June 1, for a six-game home stand against the Binghamton mets and Erie SeaWolves. That weekend's games feature two of the most highly anticipated events of the year at Prince George's Stadium. Friday, June 4, is Legends of Wrestling Night, where fans can meet and get autographs from three-time WWF champion and New York Times bestselling author Mick Foley.
