Akron RubberDucks News Release

Monday Blues... Altoona convincingly dominated the Aeros Monday at Canal Park as Curve left fielder Alex Presley had a career night at the plate. Presley finished 4-5 with a franchise-record eight RBI and blasted the Akron pitching staff from the very first inning. Lefty starter Scott Barnes (1-5) allowed four runs in that first as a Presley bases-clearing triple led the way. He then hit homers in the third and fifth all the while Altoona starter Tim Alderson (3-2) earned the win with seven shutout innings. The lone Akron run came in ninth as a Jared Goedert double preceded a run-scoring fielder's choice off the bat of Beau Mills. With the loss, the Aeros dropped to 6-16 at Canal Park and 10 games behind the Curve in the Western Division of the Eastern League.

Day and Night... Barnes' struggles Monday epitomized an up-and-down season for the St. John's University product. Although he has two no-hit starts this season and is the reigning Eastern League Pitcher of the week, he also has had several poor starts both at home and during the nighttime. In his two night starts at Canal Park, he is now 0-2 with a 17.18 ERA. He has done much better in his seven other starts this season, holding a 4.96 ERA in 31.1 innings pitched. Barnes was originally selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 8th-round of the June 2008 Draft and the Indians acquired him in a trade last July.

Johnny Be Good... Left fielder John Drennen was one of three Akron batters to collect two hits Monday night against Altoona. He is currently sitting on a season-high seven-game hitting streak and has raised his batting average 56 points in this stretch thanks to five multi-hit outings. Overall, he is batting .500 (12-24) with two runs scored and three RBI since May 16.

Zach Attack... The back-end of the Aeros bullpen was impressive Monday as Bryce Stowell, Zach Putnam and Bryan Price held the Curve scoreless over the final 4.1 innings. On a personal level, Putnam's scoreless eighth continued a solid stretch this month. The 22-year-old has a 1.59 ERA and two saves along with 10 strikeouts against one walk in five games (two starts) in May.

Mighty Curve... Altoona's 2010 dominance in this series has been quite the surprise in comparison to last year. In 2009, Akron won 17 of 24 meetings en route to winning another Eastern League Championship. This year however, first-place Altoona is 7-2 against the Aeros while out-scoring the team 50-22. The Curve franchise was also the second-to-last besides Akron (2005-2009 pennant winners) to represent the Southern Division in the Championship Series, capturing the pennant in 2004.

Birthday Boy Deux... The red-hot Goedert will be celebrating his 25th birthday Tuesday night, two days after teammate Matt McBride turned 25 as well. Owner of the longest current hitting streak in the EL at 13 games, he has played just once on his birthday in his career. That was in 2007 with Class A Lake County and he finished 3-4 with a home run and a career-high six RBI.
