Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - Binghamton right-hander Eddie Kunz stymied Richmond into the eighth inning and the B-Mets pounded the Flying Squirrels, 10-0, in game two of a four-game series on Tuesday night in front of 2,389 at NYSEG Stadium. The loss was the most lop-sided of the season for Richmond, as Binghamton racked up the most runs allowed in a single game by Squirrels pitching.
The Squirrels found themselves in an early hole as the B-Mets started quickly against Craig Clark in the first inning. Kirk Nieuwenhuis singled to start the threat and Clark walked both Luis Hernandez and Nick Evans to load the bases. Eric Campbell followed and sent a single back up the middle that scored two runs. Darren Ford misplayed the ball in center field, allowing Evans to move to third. He scored a batter later to give Binghamton a 3-0 lead when Mike Nickeas bounced out to third base. Two of three runs charged to Clark were earned.
The B-Mets widened the gap and chased Clark with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Clark issued his fourth walk of the ballgame to start the inning, putting Carlos Guzman aboard. Two outs later, Nieuwenhuis blasted his fifth home run of the season to right-center field for a 5-0 lead.
Clark (2-3) departed following the home run, lasting just 3 2/3 innings. He endured the loss, allowing five runs - four earned - on five hits. He walked four and struck out two as he lost for the third time on the year.
Binghamton blew the game open with a five-run fifth inning. All the runs were charged to reliever Felix Romero. The inning included an RBI double for Hector Pellot, and two-run doubles from Hernandez and Campbell. Campbell finished the ballgame with four runs driven in.
All the while, Kunz (4-3) was outstanding, turning in 7 2/3 scoreless innings - the longest outing of his career - to earn the win. He allowed just four hits, walked two and struck out five as he lasted into the eighth inning.
Game three of the four-game series is scheduled for 6:35 PM on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. RHP Mike MacDonald (1-3, 3.35) will make the start for Richmond against a yet to be determined starter for the B-Mets.
