Chesapeake Baysox News Release
The Bowie Baysox won a grueling 15-inning game 7-3 over the Harrisburg Senators Tuesday night. The game was concluded in four hours and 43 minutes, making it the longest game in both time and innings that the Baysox have played in over four years, dating back to a five hour and five minute, 16-inning loss to New Britain at Prince George's Stadium on May 8, 2006
The victory pushed the Baysox to a 22-22 record, the first time they have stood at .500 since a May 8 loss at Trenton. Bowie is now in fourth place in the six-team Eastern League Western Division, half a game behind Erie for third place and six games out of first. The Baysox have had Harrisburg's number all season, with a 7-1 record against the Nationals' Double-A affiliate.
It was the second consecutive quality start for Japanese right-hander Ryohei Tanaka, and his fifth of the season. He surrendered two runs off seven hits through 6.0 innings pitched, as he received no decision in the game.
The Baysox surged ahead in the top of the 15th inning with a pair of two-RBI hits by third baseman Brandon Waring and catcher Caleb Joseph to open a four-run lead that the Senators could not answer in the bottom half of the inning.
Center fielder Matt Angle got the game off to a flying start with a leadoff home run to right field in the top of the first inning. It was the first long ball of the season for Angle, and the first leadoff home run for the Baysox since Sebastian Boucher hit one in Trenton on August 12, 2008. Angle is off to a fantastic start in 2010; the home run extended his league-best hit streak to 15 games, stretching back to September 4, 2009.
Harrisburg tied it 1-1 in the fifth inning, as an RBI groundout by second baseman Josh Johnson broke up the shutout when designated hitter Marvin Lowrance scored from third base.
Both teams went deep with solo homers in the sixth inning to keep the game knotted. Baysox second baseman Ryan Adams led off the top half with his first dinger of the year on a line drive that cleared the left field wall. Washington Nationals shortstop prospect Danny Espinosa answered with a leadoff home run of his own to right field off Tanaka's second pitch of the inning.
Pitchers Mike Hinckley, Eddie Gamboa and Jim Hoey all served the Baysox well coming out of the bullpen and kept Bowie in position to win the game. The three relievers gave up just two hits through 7.0 innings as the game pushed deep into into the night. Gamboa especially stood out with 2.2 perfect innings and three strikeouts.
The Baysox missed several opportunities to win late in the game, as they put a runner in scoring position in the ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th innings but failed to drive him in every time. They finally succeeded in the top of the 14th inning as outfielder Jonathan Tucker led off with a walk and stole second base. Catcher Caleb Joseph plated him with a single to right-center field to put the Baysox up 3-2.
The win temporarily slipped through Bowie's fingers, though, as well-regarded Nationals prospect Chris Marerro homered in his fourth consecutive game to open the bottom of the 14th. It was the first run that right-handed reliever Pedro Beato had surrendered in over a month, a shutout streak that lasted16.0 innings over 10 games. All three runs Beato has given up in 2010 have been solo home runs.
Though Beato was charged with the blown save, he earned the win as the Baysox came back with a flurry of four hits to score four runs in the top of the 15th inning. Adams got aboard with an infield single before left fielder Tyler Henson drew a walk. Both runners advanced into scoring position with Joel Guzman's groundout, as third baseman Brandon Waring stepped up to the plate with two outs. Waring had been having a frustrating night, as he was 0-for-6 and wearing the dreaded "golden sombrero" with four strikeouts, but delivered with the game on the line with a bases-clearing single to left field that put the Baysox ahead 5-3.
Tucker followed Waring with another single and both runners scored on Joseph's two-RBI double to left to put the game further out of reach as big right-hander Brandon Cooney put the Senators away in the bottom of the 15th, with no hits, a walk and a strikeout.
The Baysox will try to extend their modest run into a three-game win streak in game two of the four-game series Tuesday at 7 p.m. After this series, the team will head to Richmond for four more games with the Flying Squirrels.
They return to Bowie on Tuesday, June 1, for a six-game home stand against the Binghamton mets and Erie SeaWolves. That weekend's games feature two of the most highly anticipated events of the year at Prince George's Stadium. Friday, June 4, is Legends of Wrestling Night, where fans can meet and get autographs from three-time WWF champion and New York Times bestselling author Mick Foley.
