New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

New Britain, CT- David Cooper went 2-for-2 with a grand slam and five RBIs as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats took game one of a doubleheader from the New Britain Rock Cats, 7-5, on Tuesday night at New Britain Stadium, but New Britain capitalized on a pair of seventh-inning New Hampshire errors to salvage the nightcap, 2-1.

With two outs and the bases full in the top of the fifth of game one, Cooper (2-for-2, GS, 2B, BB, 5 RBI) launched an 0-2 pitch from New Britain starter and losing pitcher Tyler Robertson over the right field wall for his second homer of the season, upping the Fisher Cats' lead from 3-0 to 7-0. Earlier in the inning, Shawn Bowman (1-for-4, RBI, R) singled home Manny Mayorson (2-for-4, 2B, R), who singled.

New Hampshire used a pair of two-out RBI hits to break a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning. Adam Loewen (2-for-4, R, SB) singled, stole second and scored when Cooper doubled to right. Jonathan Jaspe (2-for-3, 2B, RBI) made it 2-0 with a run-scoring single to right, plating Cooper.

Luis Perez (5-3) earned the victory, despite getting rocked in the bottom of the seventh. New Britain scored five runs in the inning, with both Rene Tosoni (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) and Steve Singleton (1-for-2, HR, HBP, 2 RBI) belting two-run homers off Perez. Trystan Magnuson entered the game with no outs and allowed an inherited run to score on Erik Lis's opposite-field double. Magnuson bounced back, however, to induce a game-ending pop out by Juan Portes (1-for-4, R) with the tying run in scoring position to notch his second save and stretch his consecutive scoreless-innings streak to 17.2.

Perez went six-plus innings, allowing five runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts to move into a tie with Kyle Drabek for the team lead in victories (5).

Robertson (0-4) was reached for seven runs on 11 hits in six innings in the loss. The left-hander surrendered three walks and fanned four.

In game two, the Fisher Cats (27-18) were down to their final out in the top of the seventh when Mayorson (1-for-3, RBI) hit an RBI single off Kyle Gibson, scoring pinch-runner Darin Mastroianni with an unearned run to tie the game, 1-1.

The Rock Cats walked away with their second walk-off triumph of the series when Singleton (2-for-3, R) led off the bottom of the seventh with a single off reliever Boomer Potts, who was making his Double-A debut. Singleton scampered to third when Potts committed a throwing error on Jair Fernandez' sacrifice bunt. Following an intentional walk to Juan Portes, Mayorson committed a fielding error on Ben Revere's grounder to short, allowing Singleton to score the game-winning run.

Potts (0-1) suffered the tough-luck loss after giving up the unearned run on one hit and an intentional walk in one-third of an inning.

Gibson (3-0) allowed just one unearned run on seven hits in going the distance for his third win in three Double-A starts. The right-hander fanned four.

New Britain (13-31) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when spot starter Adrian Martin issued back-to-back walks to Rene Tosoni and Erik Lis, and then yielded a two-out RBI single to Yangervis Solarte (1-for-3, RBI).

Martin allowed one run on two hits in a season-high four innings, with three strikeouts and two walks.

Tim Collins notched four strikeouts in two shutout innings, scattering two hits.

New Hampshire and New Britain meet for the fourth game of their five-game series on Wednesday night at 6:35pm when Fisher Cats right-hander Kyle Drabek (5-4, 3.59) opposes Rock Cats righty David Bromberg (2-2, 3.45). Fisher Cats Pre-Game begins at 6:15pm with Bob Lipman and Mike Murphy on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.

The Fisher Cats welcome the Trenton Thunder to Merchantsauto.com Stadium over Memorial Day weekend, with three straight Atlas Fireworks Shows scheduled for Friday, May 28 (7:05pm); Saturday, May 29 (6:05pm, doubleheader); and Sunday, May 30 (6:05pm).
