Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Davenport, Iowa - Playing in front of their home crowd for the first time in 2022, the Quad Cities River Bandits mustered just three hits as they fell to their adversaries in last year's High-A Central Championship Series, the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 8-1 on Tuesday night at Modern Woodmen Park.

Taking the mound on his 22nd birthday, Kernels' starter Cade Povich began his day with an early 1-0 lead after Anthony Prato's leadoff triple off of Bandits' right-hander Anderson Paulino led to Christian Encarnacion-Strand's minor league leading 16th RBI via a 6-3 groundout.

After allowing a pair of baserunners with one out in the first, Povich closed out his 5.0-inning start retiring 14-straight Quad Cities' hitters, including striking out the side in the fourth and fifth.

Despite the rocky start, Paulino settled down in the second and third innings and faced the minimum, but after allowing three consecutive baserunners to reach, Seth Gray tagged the righty for a two-RBI double which led to his departure at 3.0 innings of work.

Cedar Rapids wasted no time getting after his replacement however, as Ruben Ramirez's first assignment, Jair Camargo, blasted a three-run home run to give the visitors a 6-0 lead, marking the first inherited runners allowed by the River Bandits this season.

In the top of the sixth, Q.C. fell behind even further when Harrison Beethe walked all three batters he faced and allowed two of them to score on subsequent wild pitches. The righty didn't record an out in his High-A debut.

Down 8-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Tyler Gentry, the lone bright spot in the River Bandits' lineup. took advantage of Diego Hernandez's one out walk and drove in his club's lone tally with an RBI single off of Kernels' reliever Miguel Rodriguez.

In the final third of the game, both teams combined for just five baserunners as the Bandits' bullpen duo of Mitch Ellis and Yohanse Morel calmed Cedar Rapids' bats, but Derek Molina and Andrew Cabezas stuck out four Bandits in the eighth and ninth to prevent any late-inning Q.C. rally.

Povich (1-0) capped off his gem with his first career High-A win, while Paulino (0-1) was pegged with the loss.

Quad Cities will return to Modern Woodmen Park on Wednesday for game two of the six-game set behind the arm of Charlie Neuweiler (0-0, 0.00), while Cedar Rapids will give the ball to Sean Mooney (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30pm CT.
