LOUISVILLE, KY- Stuart Fairchild hits his team-leading seventh home run of the season, but the Louisville Bats (25-44) dropped the third out of four games with the Iowa Cubs (33-36) by a score of 9-3 on Friday night at Louisville Slugger Field.
[BOX SCORE]
Stuart Fairchild and Cristian Santana led the Bats' offense with a pair of multi-hit efforts, combining for five of Louisville's eight hits in the game.
Iowa scratched the first runs of the ball game early when they were able to work some two-out magic in the first inning. After Bats' starter Randy Wynne (1-9, 5.14) was able to quickly retire the first two hitters of the contest, back-to-back singles set up Cubs' outfielder Jackson Frazier for a bloop fly ball that eluded the glove of a diving Juniel Querecuto, finding some grass on the right field foul line and resulting in a 2-RBI double, giving the Cubs an early 2-0 edge.
Louisville cut the Iowa lead in half in the bottom of the second, when outfielder Stuart Fairchild launched his seventh homerun of the season, and third as a Louisville Bat, screaming over the left-center field wall onto the grassy berm. Fairchild would finish the game going 3-for-4 and coming up a double short of the cycle.
The Cubs, however, were able to recover the lost run in the following half-inning when former Bat Narciso Crook put the ball in play with a runner at third and one out, grounding into a force out but bringing home the insurance run and regaining the two-run advantage, at 3-1.
Iowa's southpaw starter Wyatt Short (1-0, 3.43) settled in nicely after allowing the solo home run, working four innings, surrendering just four hits and the lone run.
The Cubs added on to their lead in the sixth and seventh innings, plating three more runs in each inning and collecting 14 hits on the day. Louisville scratched two more runs in the top of the ninth to complete the final score of 9-3.
The penultimate game of the six game set between the Bats and the Cubs is scheduled for Saturday night (June 25) with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Robert Dugger (0-1, 6.26) will take the hill for Louisville, while fellow righty Luke Farrell (2-1, 4.44) will get the start for Iowa.
