IronPigs Give Up a Season-High 21 Hits

(Allentown, PA) - The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (38-32) fell short on Friday evening against the Norfolk Tides (34-36) as they lost 10-7. Despite giving up a season-high 21 hits, the IronPigs managed 10 hits and nearly rallied after trailing 9-2.

Kent Emanuel made a start for the IronPigs on Major League Rehab from the Philadelphia Phillies. He gave up a run in the top of the first inning as Gunnar Henderson scored on a groundout by Kyle Stowers. Emmanuel struck out three batters over four innings pitched.

Mike Baumann for Norfolk pitched three scoreless innings to start the game. Jeff Singer added a scoreless inning of relief for Lehigh Valley. The Tides took a 2-0 lead against James Marvel (2-6) in the top of the sixth inning as Shed Long Jr. hit an RBI double that scored DJ Stewart. Rafael Marchan tied the game at 2-2 for Lehigh Valley in the bottom of the sixth inning as he hit a two-run double against Logan Gillaspie (3-1).

Norfolk broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning as they took a 6-2 lead. Jacob Nottingham hit a sacrifice fly that scored Henderson then Stewart hit an RBI single that scored Jordan Westburg. Cadyn Grenier walked with the bases loaded to score Stowers and Stewart scored on a bases loaded walk by Beau Taylor. Two runs were charged to Marvel, while two runs were charged to Jonathan Hennigan.

Norfolk scored three runs against Joe Gatto in the top of the eighth inning that extended the lead to 9-2. Stowers hit a two-run home run and Long Jr. hit an RBI single. Lehigh Valley answered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against Rico Garcia. Dustin Peterson hit a two-run home run and Jorge Bonifacio hit a solo home run.

Henderson homered against Aaron Barrett in the top of the ninth inning to give Norfolk a 10-5 lead. Darick Hall hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning against Isaac Mattson to cut Norfolk's lead to 10-7.

The IronPigs and Norfolk Tides continue their series on Saturday evening. First pitch on is at 6:35 p.m.
