NEWS & NOTES
FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders are in Toldeo, Ohio for the first time since May 19, 2019. They split a four-game series with the Toledo Mud Hens in that series. This six-game series is the only time these two teams meet this season. This is also currently the furthest Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has traveled this season. Fifth Third Field is 479 miles away from PNC Field.
WHO DAT - The Mud Hens, Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, are the first International League West team the RailRiders face this season. They find themselves in fourth place in the West division entering Friday, three and a half games back of Nashville. After losing eight of nine, the Mud Hens have won eleven of their last fifteen games since June 5.
SEVENTEEN AGAIN - The RailRiders tallied 17 hits as a lineup and 17 strikeouts as a pitching staff on Thursday night. The most hits the RailRiders have tallied in a single-game this year is 19 against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on April 28. The strikeout total did set a new single-game high. The most strikeouts in a single-game this season was 16, something they did twice on May 11 against Syracuse and April 23 in Buffalo. The most hits in a single-game in franchise history is 27, set May 31, 1998 against Toledo. The most strikeouts in a single-game in franchise history is 22, set August 19, 2016 against Pawtucket.
DOUBLE TROUBLE - The RailRiders tallied six doubles in Thursday night's game. They had seven doubles total in the prior four games combined. Thanks to seven extra-base hits on the evening, 12-of-35 (34.3 %) hits in the series for the RailRiders have gone for extra bases.
WEB HEAD - The Yankees signed Ryan Weber to a Minor League contract on Wednesday after his brief stint in the show, replacing Luis Severino after he was placed on the COVID-IL last week. He will start Friday's game which will be his ninth SWB appearance of the season and his fifth start. He has not started for the RailRiders since June 9. Weber is slated to pitch in front of Matt Krook tonight.
PITA HOT - Matt Pita was activated from the injured list Tuesday. Pita has not appeared in a game since May 12, putting him on the IL for 39 days. At the time of his injury, Pita led the team in home runs (4) in 19 games played. He played 27 games for the RailRiders in 2021. He has yet to make an appearance since being activated off the IL.
ROB CITY - Rob Brantly has been hot in this series in Toledo. The 32-year-old veteran is 5-for-8 in the series with three doubles, a walk and two RBI. To find five total hits for Brantly, you have to go back to May 7 tallying fifteen games played in with the RailRiders. Prior to these two multi-hit performances on Wednesday (three hits) and Thursday (two hits), Brantly had just one all season (two-hit game April 28 vs Lehigh Valley). 2022 is Brantly's second season with the RailRiders (68 games in 2021).
