ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Major league rehabber Yoshi Tsutsugo went 3-for-3 but the Indianapolis Indians dropped Game 3 of the six-game series against the Memphis Redbirds on Thursday night, 4-3. Indians (34-33) pitching surrendered 12 walks in the loss, their most since matching that figure on Sept. 1, 2015 at Columbus. Memphis (39-30) countered with 14 strikeouts as a staff, Indy's most at Victory Field this season. Down 2-0 after the Redbirds' first two offensive innings, the Indians came to the plate and scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Following a leadoff single by Rodolfo Castro, Travis Swaggerty put the Indians on the board with an RBI double. A sacrifice fly and run-scoring groundout pushed Indy in front. Memphis tied the game with an RBI single off the bat of Connor Capel in the top of the fourth inning, and the score remained knotted until the eighth. Following a one-out walk, Alec Burleson doubled off Cristofer Melendez (L, 2-4) to plate the game-winning run. Blake Parker (W, 1-2) earned the win with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched. Jacob Bosiokovic (S, 3) fanned two in the ninth to seal Memphis' first win of the series and second in nine overall games at Victory Field.
ON THE CLOCK: Last night's game lasted 3 hours and 15 minutes, the sixth-longest game for Indianapolis this season after it completed Wednesday afternoon's game in 2 hours and 6 minutes, tied for the Indians' second-shortest nine-inning game of the season. Last season, Indy's 48 nine-inning games at Victory Field averaged 2:55 to complete. No teams in Triple-A are averaging games of over three hours this season, compared to 20 in 2021.
NOTHING AGAINST NOE: Reliver Noe Toribio was transferred from Double-A Altoona to Indy on Tuesday and threw 1.1 scoreless innings of relief last night in his Triple-A debut. Toribio threw just five of 17 pitches for strikes and stranded three baserunners (one hit batter, two walks). The Dominican Republic native excelled with the Curve this year, going 3-1 with a 1.85 ERA (8er/39.0ip) and 1.08 WHIP in 15 games (one start). He also only issued 13 walks in his 39.0 innings of work, equating to a 3.00 BB/9.0ip ratio.
HAPPY HOMECOMING: Eric Stout, who attended Butler University from 2012-14 and compiled an 11-12 record, 5.91 ERA (100er/152.1ip) and 120 strikeouts in 28 games (27 starts) in his sophomore and junior seasons, made his Indians debut last night and tossed a scoreless sixth inning. Prior to joining Indy's roster, he had spent most of the 2022 season with Triple-A Iowa, where he compiled a 2-2 record, 3.94 ERA (13er/29.2ip) and 48 strikeouts in 16 games (one start).
YOSHI, YOSHI, YOSHI: Yoshi Tsutsugo played seven innings last night and laced three singles and walked in four plate appearances before departing. In his first rehab appearance with Indy on Tuesday, he walked once in two plate appearances. The three-hit game for the 30-year-old was his first since going 3-for-4 on Aug. 9, 2021 with Triple-A Oklahoma City at Albuquerque.
BAE ON BAE-SE: Ji-Hwan Bae collected two hits in four at-bats last night, including his 15th double of the season. He has reached base safely in 53 of his 62 games played this season. After batting .322 (29-for-90) over 24 games in May, Bae is having another strong month with a .321 clip (25-for-78) in 19 June contests. The 22-year-old ranks among league leaders in runs scored (T-3rd, 48), triples (T-5th, 4), hits (6th), stolen bases (T-7th, 15) and average (8th).
SO MUCH SWAGGER-TY: After going 1-for-3 with a run-scoring double and walk last night, Travis Swaggerty has now hit safely in 22 of his last 25 games with a .347 average (34-for-98), 12 extra-base hits (five doubles, three triples, four home runs) and 22 RBI dating back to May 17. In June, he has hit safely in 11 of 12 games, four of which have been multi-hit contests, with a .319 average (15-for-47). In the middle of his hot streak, Swaggerty made his MLB debut with the Pirates and recorded his first big-league hit.
BYE BYE BRICE: The Pirates announced today that relief pitcher Austin Brice had his contract selected. In a corresponding move, right-hander Jerad Eickhoff was designated for assignment to clear space on Pittsburgh's 40-man roster. Brice, who turned 30 this past Sunday, was 2-2 with five saves in eight opportunities. He also had a 3.04 ERA (9er/26.2ip), 31 strikeouts, 1.16 WHIP and .200 average against (20-for-100) in 24 appearances for Indy. Brice has not yet pitched for Pittsburgh this season after making major league appearances with Miami (2016, '19) Cincinnati (2017-18) and Boston (2020-21).
TONIGHT: The Indians and Redbirds meet for the fourth game of their six-game series at 7:05 PM ET. Indy will send left-hander Zach Matson to the bump for his eighth appearance and third overall as an opener in an Indians uniform. He has surrendered four earned runs in 3.0 innings (12.00 ERA) in his two previous opener appearances, the most recent opener coming June 15 at Gwinnett (2er in 1.0ip). Memphis will counter with 32-year-old veteran Aaron Brooks, who has a wealth of Triple-A experience. Brooks' debut season in Triple-A came in 2014 with Omaha, where he went 12-3 with a 3.88 ERA (60er/139.0ip) in 25 games (23 starts). He has made 109 appearances (93 starts) in Triple-A over the course of his career along with 52 outings (28 starts) in the majors with Kansas City (2014-15), Oakland (2015, 2018-19), Baltimore (2019) and St. Louis (2022).
THIS DATE IN 1974, ALSO KNOWN AS HOWARD KELLMAN'S ROOKIE SEASON: Indians second baseman Junior Kennedy went 6-for-6 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored in a 15-7 win at Denver. Kennedy's six hits tied an American Association record. Center fielder Tom Spencer also smacked two home runs and had six RBI, and the Indians totaled 28 hits in the high altitude.
