Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Midwest League All-Star Classic creeps closer each day, and the Great Lakes Loons appear to be hitting their stride, inching higher up the league's standings as the mid-summer break approaches.

Now winners of back-to-back games, the Loons used a confident presence at the plate and sturdy bullpen to claim a 7-3 victory over the Peoria Chiefs on Thursday Night at Dow Diamond.

The Loons are less than five games behind the Lansing Lugnuts, who hold the first-place spot in the Midwest League Eastern standings.

Great Lakes (27-26) broke the game open in the bottom of the 4th inning when left fielder Jacob Scavuzzo hit his 4th home run of the season to left field off Chiefs starter Luis Perdomo (2-5), who took the loss. Scavuzzo's blast gave the Loons a 4-1 lead they never lost.

"The guys did a good job tonight at the plate," said Loons interim manager Travis Barbary. "No matter what team you're on good hitting is contagious."

Barbary stepped in to manage the Loons because interim manager Robert Fick was unavailable due to illness. Luis Matos will return as the club's manager on Friday.

After Peoria (26-28) pushed across an unearned run during the top of the 2nd inning, Great Lakes settled in and reclaimed the lead.

Second baseman Kelvin Ramos, center fielder Johan Mieses and designated hitter Jimmy Allen combined for three consecutive base hits to lead off the 3rd inning. Slugger Alex Santana hit a towering fly nearly 400 feet to straight-away centerfield, scoring Ramos and tying the game at a run a piece.

One batter later, first baseman Ivan Vela turned on Perdomo fastball and sent an opposite-field base hit over the head of the shortstop and bulked the lead up to 3-1.

Starting pitcher Joe Broussard turned in four innings of work, during which he surrendered six hits and just one earned run.

Ramos continued his impressive hitting streak with a one-out two RBI double up the middle, giving Great Lakes a 6-1 lead. Mieses drove in another run and reached first base on a throwing error, making it 7-1.

Reliever Derek Sylvester (1-0) entered the game in the 5th inning and kept Peoria off the base paths during his 2 2/3 innings of work while earning the win. David Reid-Foley came on in the 9th inning, struck out two and earned the save.

The Loons go for the series sweep Friday when top prospect and 2015 All-Star Grant Holmes takes the mound. Holmes is 3-0 this season with a 3.22 earned run average. Peoria sends lefty Austin Gomber to the hill with a 4-3 record and 3.29 ERA. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

Friday night is Family Campout Night at Dow Diamond. Fans who purchase the package will camp out on the outfield after watching a movie under the starts on the Dow Diamond video board.

The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
