
Kernels Lose 6-4 at South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Kernels fell 6-4 at South Bend on Thursday at Four Winds Field. The Cubs scored four runs in the first inning, snapping a five-game winning streak for Cedar Rapids. South Bend recorded six doubles and seven total extra-base hits on the evening. The rubber game of the series is on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. CT.
South Bend claimed a 4-0 lead right away in the first inning, collecting three doubles and two walks while sending eight men to the plate. Charcer Burks began the inning with a walk before advancing to third base on a double by Gleyber Torres. Burks scored on Andrew Ely's RBI groundout. With two outs, the Cubs collected back to back doubles to make the score 3-0. Cael Brockmeyer's RBI double to left-center plated Torres while Kevin Encarnacion's RBI double off the wall in right-center brought in Brockmeyer. Brockmeyer eventually came home after a pair of wild pitches by Kernels starter Dereck Rodriguez.
The Kernels picked up their first run in the second inning, making the score 4-1. Jorge Fernandez doubled off the wall in left to begin the inning, later scoring on a RBI groundout by Edgar Corcino.
Corcino cut South Bend's lead to 4-3 in the fourth inning with he crushed a two-run home run to right-center field. It scored Alex Real, who singled with two outs. Corcino now has a hit in his first five games played. The home run was the team's first since Memorial Day at Beloit, snapping a season-long eight game-homerless streak.
South Bend scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, pushing their lead to 6-3. Brockmeyer's RBI triple into South Bend's bullpen in right field, his third extra-base hit of the night, scored Yasiel Balaguert, who singled with one out in the fifth. Back to back doubles in the sixth inning plated another run. Jesse Hodges started the inning with a double before touching home on Rashad Crawford's RBI double to right.
The Kernels plated a run in the eighth inning to make the score 6-4. Nick Gordon singled with one out and scored on Jorge Fernandez's RBI double to right-center, his second double of the evening.
Dereck Rodriguez (0-1) took the loss for Cedar Rapids in his Midwest League debut. He allowed four runs on five hits in three innings, striking out one and walking four. Michael Theofanopoulos went three innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four and walking none. Michael Cederoth tossed a perfect inning, striking out one. Cam Booser allowed no runs and one hit while striking out one in one inning.
Trevor Clifton (2-4) earned the win for South Bend. He allowed three runs on five hits in five innings, striking out three. Brad Markey allowed one run in three innings of relief work. James Farris recorded his seventh save, pitching a scoreless and hitless ninth inning.
The series at South Bend concludes on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. CT (7:35 p.m. ET). RHP Keaton Steele (2-0, 2.70) takes the hill for the Kernels against South Bend's RHP Jake Stinnett (1-2, 6.27).
The Kernels return home on Wednesday, June 10 to begin a nine-game home stand. Cedar Rapids hosts the Great Lakes Loons, the Midwest League affiliate of the Dodgers. It's a Free Money Wednesday, presented by Western Fraternal Life. Western Fraternal Life will give away $500 at the main gates at every Wednesday home game, with $100 being the top prize.
