Chesapeake Baysox News Release

Harrisburg, Pa. - After waiting out an hour long rain delay before the game started, Baysox starter Tim Bascom held the Senators to two runs over seven innings of work as the Baysox topped the Harrisburg Senators 4-2 Monday night in Harrisburg. With the victory the Baysox improve to 51-42, and now trail the Senators by 3.5 games in the Western Division.

First baseman Joe Mahoney knocked in two of the Baysox four runs on three hits. In the past two games, Mahoney has recorded five RBIs and two doubles to lead the Baysox as they closed the gap in the standings with Harrisburg.

Bowie took the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Center fielder Xavier Avery led off with a single center field and second baseman Greg Miclat drew a walk to put runners on first and second with nobody out. After Baltimore Orioles left fielder Luke Scott popped out to second base, Mahoney launched a double to right field, plating Avery and Miclat to put the Baysox in front 2-0. Mahoney was stranded at second base when catcher Caleb Joseph and left fielder LJ Hoes flew out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the first inning, Harrisburg second baseman Josh Johnson led off with a double to the wall in right-center field and scored when first baseman Bill Rhinehart doubled to center field. Tyler Moore followed with a single to left field and Bascom walked 2010 first overall draft pick Bryce Harper to load the bases with two outs, but the right-hander escaped further damage when Archie Gilbert grounded out to end the inning with Bowie up 2-1.

In the top of the second inning shortstop Pedro Florimon and right fielder Ronnie Welty hit back-to-back doubles to restore the two-run lead and Bowie added a fourth run in the top of the third inning. Mahoney hit a one-out single in the third inning and stole second base with two outs. Hoes hit a ground ball to first base but beat the throw to the bag for an RBI and an infield single. Hoes stole second base before third baseman Brandon Waring popped out to end the inning with Bowie up 4-1.

Harrisburg added another run in the bottom of the third inning with the aid of a costly wild pitch. Rhinehart led off with a single to right field and advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Bascom. Moore singled to center field, plating Rhinehart for his 12th RBI in 13 games against Bowie this season. Bascom retired the next three batters in order to end the frame with Bowie still up 4-2.

After allowing the two runs in the first three innings, Bascom allowed two base runners through his final four innings, both of whom were promptly erased in a double play. The right-hander has thrown seven innings in each of his last three starts, allowing a total of three earned runs over that span. He is now 6-2 on the season, and leads the Baysox in wins, ERA 2.92 and is second in innings pitched (80.0).

Left-hander Pedro Viola retired the only batter he faced in the bottom of the eighth inning before being relieved by right-hander Raul Rivero who worked two-thirds of a scoreless inning in relief. Right-hander Brandon Cooney worked a scoreless ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.

Miclat scored a run in the game, but failed to record a hit and saw his team-high 13 game hitting streak come to an end. The streak began July 1 and Monday marked the first game all month where Miclat had an at bat and failed to record a hit.

The Baysox began a three-game road trip Monday night in Harrisburg. They return home Thursday, July 21, for a seven game home stand that features Daddy Daughter Date Night Thursday night, Bowie's Largest Pillow Fight and Heroes Night Friday, Welcome to Margaritaville Saturday night and the Jayson Werth Bobblehead giveaway Monday, July 25.
