Eastern League Names Pitcher and Player of the Week

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of July 11th through July 17th:

Akron Aeros first baseman Beau Mills is the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of July 11th-July 17th. The 24-year old had an outstanding week for the Aeros, batting .632 (12-for-19) with four doubles, three home runs, nine RBI, seven runs scored, three walks and a 1.316 slugging percentage in five games. Mills, who is a native of Visalia, California, had three hits in three of the games he played in last week, scored at least one run in all five games and drove in multiple runs three times. The 6'3", 220 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in batting average (.632), hits (12), extra-base hits (7), doubles (4), RBI (9), on-base percentage (.682), slugging percentage (1.316), OPS (1.998) and total bases (25) last week. He also tied for first in home runs (3) and runs scored (7). Mills has appeared in 57 games for the Aeros this season and is batting .304 with 16 doubles, nine home runs, 44 RBI and 33 runs scored. Beau was selected by the Cleveland Indians with the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 2007 draft after hitting .458 with 38 home runs, 123 RBI and 100 runs scored and being named the NAIA Player of the Year during his junior season at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho.

Michael Ballard, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Bowie Baysox, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 11th-July 17th. The 6'2", 180 lb. southpaw made two appearances for the Baysox last week and had a record of 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 14.0 innings pitched. Ballard, who is a native of Norfolk, Virginia, made his first appearance of the week on Monday afternoon at Altoona and allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four batters over six innings. He earned a no-decision in Bowie's 5-3, 11-inning win. In his second start of the week the 27-year old surrendered just one run on six hits while striking out four batters over eight innings in Bowie's 6-1 win over Richmond at Prince George's Stadium on Sunday night. With that performance he improved his record to 5-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.06. Michael, who has walked just three batters while striking out 54 over 53 innings pitched with the Baysox this season, was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a Minor League Free Agent during this past offseason. He was originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the 14th round of the 2006 draft after going 9-3 with a 4.09 ERA during his senior season at the University of Virginia.
