Aeros Walk-Off on Diaz's RBI Single

AKRON, OH - Juan Diaz flipped a bloop RBI single over Altoona short stop Brock Holt's head in the bottom of ninth inning breaking a 3-3 tie and giving the Akron Aeros a 4-3 walk-off win over the Curve in game one of a three-game series Monday at Canal Park.

Right-handed pitcher Anthony Clagget allowed the Diaz single and suffered the loss for Altoona.

Right-hander Matt Langwell recorded the win for the Aeros pitching one and two thirds innings, scattering three hits and striking out two while walking none. Righty Austin Adams got the start for Akron tossing 7.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and striking out six while walking one.

The Aeros (50-46) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Beau Mills reached on a Holt throwing error. Chun Chen followed with an RBI triple scoring Mills and giving the Aeros a 1-0 lead.

Akron added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Jordan Henry and Diaz opened the frame with back-to-back walks. Mills singled softly to right field to load the bases. Chen followed with an RBI sacrifice fly scoring Henry and giving the Aeros a 2-0 lead. Diaz scored on a Jeff Locke wild pitch to make it 3-0.

Altoona (39-55) got a run off Adams on an RBI ground out in the top of the sixth inning to make it 3-1.

The Curve tied things in the top of the eighth inning. Starling Marte led off with a single and advanced to second on a Holt ground out. Andrew Lambo followed with an RBI single scoring Marte and cutting the Aeros lead to 3-2. Adams was lifted for right-handed pitcher Matt Langwell. Following the change, Tony Sanchez doubled home Lambo to tie the game 3-3.

The game remained tied until Diaz singled home John Drennen in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Akron the win.

The Aeros and Curve will continue their three-game series Tuesday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher Matt Packer, who is 3-9 with a 5.46 ERA in 2011. He will face right-hand pitcher Mike Colla, who is 4-6 with a 3.65 ERA this season. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on Fox Sports 1350 AM or online at sportsradio1350.com.
