(Trenton, NJ) - In game one of a three-game series, the Trenton Thunder (50-45) fell 5-4 to the Erie SeaWolves (46-49) on Monday night at Waterfront Park. The Thunder outhit the SeaWolves eleven to seven, but three Erie double plays halted Trenton's momentum. In the loss, Addison Maruszak hit his fifth homerun of the season and Zoilo Almonte drove in his first Double A run. The Erie win marks the Thunder's first three game losing streak of the season at Waterfront Park.
The SeaWolves, the Double A Affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, took a 2-0 lead with them into the bottom of the second, but the Thunder added a run to their tally in that very frame. With one out and runners at second and third, Ray Kruml grounded out to bring in a run and cut the score to 2-1. The very next inning, Zoilo Almonte's two-out single into centerfield scored Austin Romine to tie the score at 2-2.
Erie scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to re-take the lead, one they never relinquished. Thunder starting pitcher Dellin Betances received the loss as the righty and Yankees' top pitching prospect surrendered four runs in five innings on four hits and five walks.
Game two of the three-game series with the Erie Sea Wolves will take place on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. The Thunder will give the pearl to LHP Shaeffer Hall (7-4, 4.20), while the SeaWolves will counter with LHP Jay Voss (5-4, 4.07). The SBLI Pre-Game show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM. Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR and trentonthunder.com.
