San Jose Barracuda News Release
San Jose, Ca - Fresh off of a 2-1 shootout win, the San Jose Barracuda (27-12-2-4) welcomed the San Diego Gulls (27-15-3-3) (Anaheim Ducks) to SAP Center on Saturday in the first of two matchups between the clubs at the Tank over the next three days. Despite outshooting SD 43-to-31, the Barracuda allowed a season-high eight goals en-route to an 8-3 loss.
Entering Saturday, the Barracuda were just 1-3-1 against the Gulls this season, their worst record against any Pacific Division opponent. The Barracuda opened the first period dictating the pace of play, outshooting the Gulls fifteen-to-six as the period wound down. But San Jose would get into penalty trouble with 2:45 remaining in the first, when the Barracuda took two penalties on the same shift leading to a full two-minute five-on-three PP for the Gulls. Sam Carrick (23) took advantage quickly as he swiped in a pass from Ben Street just 17 seconds into the power-play to open up the scoring. With 40 seconds remaining and back at full strength, the Gulls would strike again and double their lead. Carrick centered a pass from the left corner to Chase De Leo (16) in the low-slot and De Leo poked the feed past Antoine Bibeau to give the Gulls a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.
The Gulls scored four times in the second period with tallies from Trevor Murphy (8), Carrick(24), Ben Street (3) and Sam Steel (13). The 'Cuda would get on the board however when Alexander True (15) had a Jon Martin shot bounce off his leg and past Jeff Glass after a battle deep in the Gulls' zone. But the second period would end with San Diego holding a 6-1 lead over San Jose despite the Barracuda outshooting their opponents 33-20.
San Jose opened the third period with Josef Korenar taking over for Bibeau but Corey Tropp (16) and Alex Dostie (2) scored two more times for the Gulls extending their lead to 8-1. The Barracuda would get their second goal of the game on the power-play thanks in large part to a screen by John McCarthy, which gave Rourke Chartier (5) the opportunity to fire a wrister past Glass to make it 8-2 at 14:38. San Jose would then make it 8-3 with a goal from Keaton Middleton (6) with 3:02 remaining in the game, but the damage had already been done as San Jose would fall 8-3.
The Barracuda are back in action at 1:15 PM on Monday when they take on the San Diego Gulls (Anaheim Ducks) for the second time over a three-day span. Monday is Orange You Glad Day as the Barracuda will wear Orange specialty Jerseys for the only time in 2018-19 and the first 4,000 fans will receive an Orange replica jersey. Catch all the exciting broadcast action on the Sharks + SAP Center App and watch on AHL TV.
