Cleveland Barons News Release

11/17/05 Syracuse 3, Cleveland 2 (OT)

Josh Hennessy and Lukas Kaspar each registered three point nights as the team lost to Syracuse 4-3 in overtime. Both teams skated through a scoreless first period, but the Crunch out-shot the Barons 12-6 in the period. The teams exchanged goals in the second to set up a 1-1 tie after two periods of play. Both teams scored two goals apiece in the third period as the game would extend into overtime. Grant Stevenson and Shane Joseph scored the goals for the Barons. Syracuse earned a power play goal from Joakim Lindstrom at the 4:12 mark of the sudden death frame to earn the victory.

11/18/05 Cleveland 3, Grand Rapids 6

Grand Rapids netted four unanswered goals in the third period to secure a 6-3 victory over the Barons Friday night at Grand Rapids. Cleveland was able to score two goals in the first period after Grand Rapids earned four consecutive penalties. The Griffins responded in the second period by scoring twice to tie the game at 2-2 after forty minutes of play. Josh Prudden scored just 26-seconds into the third period to re-establish the lead, but the Griffins would respond with the four remaining goals in a span of 4:39. Valterri Filppula scored twice and added an assist and Darryl Bootland earned a goal and two assists. Grant Stevenson finished the night with a goal and an assist for the Barons.

11/19/05 Grand Rapids 5, Cleveland 3

Five third period goals by the Grand Rapids Griffins was too much for the Barons to handle in a 5-3 loss to the Griffins. Cleveland scored the opening two goals of the contest in the second period for a 2-0 lead after forty minutes. Tom Cavanagh assisted on both goals. Shane Joseph converted his third of the season before Riley Armstrong scored his first of the year just 37-seconds later. Valterri Filppula scored the first of five third period goals for the Griffins to begin a dramatic comeback. Following the Griffins goal, Cavanagh scored his first goal as a pro to complete a three point night, but it was the last of the offense by the Barons. Filppula would score twice more, while Matt Ellis and Jiri Hudler tacked on additional goals in the Griffins 5-3 victory.

On the season, Murray has five points (all assists) and 21 penalty minutes.

First Things First

Center Tom Cavanagh made his professional debut Saturday against Grand Rapids, recording one goal and two assists on two shots. He finished the night with three points (1-2-3) and two penalty minutes.

Don't Take Him for Granted

Grant Stevenson has earned seven points (4-3-7) in his last five games. The center currently paces the team in points (8-8-16), goals (8), first goals (t-2) and is tied for second on the squad in assists (8) and power play goals (3).

Recent Transactions

The Sharks re-assigned left wing Ryane Clowe and right wing Steve Bernier to the Cleveland Barons. Clowe started the season with the Sharks, making his NHL debut Oct. 5 at Nashville. He recorded two points (assists) in 15 games with the parent club. Last season's most valuable player, he led the Barons in goals (27), assists (35), points (62), and plus/minus (+19). Bernier was recalled by San Jose Nov. 4 after opening the season in Cleveland, where he led the team in scoring with 10 points (4-6-10) in nine games. All-Star Honors

John Ferguson, a former Cleveland Baron and current Special Consultant to the General Manager for the Sharks, will be honored at the AHL All-Star Classic to be held Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. For his contributions to the league, the AHL has chosen him to serve as an honorary team captain at the game along with Ab McDonald. Widely regarded as the games first true enforcer, Ferguson played three season with the AHL's Cleveland Barons and was a First Team All-Star in 1963. He is currently in his third season with the Sharks organization, where he provides critical assessment of Sharks players and prepares scouting reports on all professional leagues.

Player Appearances

Members of the Barons will be visiting with the children at The Children's Hospital on today as part of the kickoff event for "This Goal is for the Kids". Tim Conboy, Josh Hennessy, Patrick Rissmiller, Jamie Holden, and Mike Iggulden, joined by SlapShark, will bring gifts for and play and make arts and crafts with pediatric patients and their families. On November 29, Ed Campbell will read to children at Mound Elementary School at 1pm.

This Goal is for the Kids

The Barons have partnered with the Cleveland Clinic in unique program called "This Goal is for the Kids". The program allows individuals and business to "score goals" for the Children's Hospital by helping to raise money to provide health care to local families who cannot otherwise afford it. Participants can purchase a membership level (assist, goal, hat trick) which earns them tickets, on-ice recognition, a group outing, and recognition at all home games. There are additional perks as you go higher in the levels which include a suite event with the President of the Barons and hockey legend Jock Callander, and a meet-and-greet with the players. Most importantly, a portion of each plan purchased is donated to The Children's Hospital.
